I always thought they were warning me about the part that just fell off so I wouldn't hit it as I was passing 'em...  I give a friendly Howdy regular wave, just like I'd give a friend that I saw while we were walking somewhere... If it's returned, cool... If it's not, oh well, no sweat off my back. And I'll wave to anything up on 2, even bicycles... When my daughter's on the back she waves at EVERYTHING... She was waving at the cows in the field even! |

Most of the time its the low wave. My hand is usually laying on my knee or hanging down at my side anyway. Makes it easy. Only done the hi wave once or twice and got laughed at.....  |

I've usually have the cruise control on, and if so, I'll wave with my right hand up high over the windshield. I have been snubbed by enough "Hardly Riders" that I really don't care what they think and it really doesn't bother me if they don't wave, however, I am going to wave to everyone. If the cruise is off, then it's a left hand wave just off the bar...JTL

well, since i live in Wisconsin, and this is hardley country, i've got to do the low wave with the pinky and ring finger in. most of the times those tough ass harley guys are too macho to wave so as i pass, if they don't wave i wipp up the middle finger.... if you're too good to wave hello then you shouldn't be riding a cycle (or maybe they're holding on for thier life 'cause the front wheel is bouncing so much)

wish someone would invent a "wave machine " bolt it to the forks and push a button and it waves twice . I hate taking my hand off the bar to wave , throws my balance off .
Sometimes I flip off the HD folks just to see if they are man enough to turn around and catch up to me

I can't help it. I got my first ride in 1965, so mine is the "peace sign", down low. However, if I know it's another Valk coming, I use the Roman salute, right hand to center of my chest. Just a little something special for a special scooter. And I have been waving at everything on two wheels (even some of them skinny-tired road hog "racing bicycles" that like to ride 3 abreast on a blind curve) since '65. Figure it doesn't hurt me, and if those Hardley riders get a bug up their nose when I wave, so much the better.  |

I am sitting here reading some of your posts, and I do believe that most of you ,are as full of bullshit as I am ,I try to wave to everyone out there.but I look at there wave first,if its the hi or low ,I move my hand ,up or dn. I wave first and hold it, and sometimes I get to loughing at the other riders ,some are so scared to take a hand off ,they have a death grip on the bar..hd riders mostly, have a great day all.Bogator

I don't wave much anymore. Back in the day when there were few of us on the road it was a common practice, but today, when every Tom, Dick & Sally rides a motorcycle  , or tries to,it's more a pain in the a$$ than anything else. BUUUUUUUUUUUT, if i ever see a VALK, you betcha i'll wave the hobo |

My formative years were spent in the military, the USMC specifically, so I don't think of it as a wave so much as the exchanging of salutes, by name, the two wheeled salute. It's normally below the bar and extended at about a forty-five degree angle, unless the distance between is long or across a median barrier and then I will raise my hand enough to be seen. I exchange the salute with anyone on two wheels who will, but I miss a few. When someone doesn't return the salute I generally assume that he missed me the same as I often see a bike just passing out of my vision to the left. When a hand is shown from across the way, my eyes are really to old to tell how many fingers are extended. Perhaps that's a good thing.
To me the salute or greeting is a nonverbal way of saying to someone else on two wheels, "You and I have something in common. We know the feel of the wind that others may not. If I see you stopped alongside the road I'll stop to see if I can help. I believe you will do the same for me. Ride safe, my friend, and enjoy the wind. Too many folks don't know enough to do so."
I wave, smile, and wink at all the children who turn their faces in my direction.
I politely tell folks who don't know any better that it's a Honda.

i'm with willow on this one. i wave, usually a peace-sign extended out at a 45 degree angle and low, unless i'm on a freeway with median barriers or something that blocks the low view. then i raise it up to be seen. the only time i don't wave is when i'm actively holding in the clutch. then i try to nod or something... give a sign of acknowledgment. we all ride, we all face the dangers of inattentive cagers, we all enjoy the wind. waving doesn't cost me anything, doesn't hurt me at all, and doesn't inconvenience me. ymmv.  |

I wave at anyone on 2 wheels except for a show off. I'd wave at him, but I'm afraid he would lose the bike and crash if he tried to return the wave...... You know the ones, on the rear or front wheel only.........
I use the Low Point, as that was basically all we used when I was a CHP. That was the wave we gave each other. We also waved at other riders, some was to pull over and stop...
I always stop to see if I can assist a biker on the side of the road. Only 1 time, I left the SOB set, he was riding a BMW, and wanted me to park over in the ditch so no one would see he was accepting help from a foreign brand bike......... I walked up, got on the bike and rode off. Stopped an LEO about 6 miles up the road and told him to go check on the butt hole...... Don't know if he got help or not..... Other wise, I have gone back home, and got the truck and trailer if we couldn't fix it on the road. I also belong to the 'AMA Helping Hands', and I get a lot of calls in the summer to come out and help someone...... These are mostly flat rear tires..... Used to try and plug them and let them ride to town. Had a few that even a string plug wouldn't stop the air from coming out. He had run over a rail road spike. Left a quarter size hole in the center of the tread. That Wing got a free ride on the trailer......

So many bikes out here especially on the weekends sometimes I spend a lot of time with my left hand off the grip. I tend to go lower than the handlebars because one time I went straight of the handle bar and at the next stop a guy in a pickup truck pulled up and yelled because he had thought I was signaling for a left hand turn. I just don't want to be cornfusing those "blue hairs" out here.
By the way, out here riding is a 365 day event.

When my parents drove us kids up to Alaska on the Alaska Hwy. (Alcan) in 1962, ( 1,100 miles of gravel road ), it was so far and in between seeing other vehicles that everyone waved at each other. Along with stoping and checking on someone that was stoped on the side of the road. Personaly, I think the wave between motorcycles is over rated. Amazing to see all the different and not so different responses... I salute...left hand to the visor...that was how I was taught by some of the older guys i rode with when I was young...their explanation of this was that in the days of olde...knights (in shinning armor) would saulte to one another, what they were doing was opening up their face shields to show their faces...over time it turned into the salute... I still use it today...and I do not see many, ok none, using it any more...years ago I would see it a lot when I rode... I salute everyone on with a motor between their legs on two wheels... |

BUUUUUUUUUUUT, if i ever see a VALK, you betcha i'll wave the hobo I was traveling from Va to the Keys last year in May, two up on my Valk and was just south of Jax FL on I-95 when a burgundy/black Valk Interstate (he had a matching burgundy T shirt) eased by me and didn't even look over and grin....I eased back up next to him and he looked at me like I was on an unkept HD....I gave him a one fingered wave...kinda' like the Doc does when he checks your colon....he just twisted it on and dissapeared....GEEEZE !!  |

We drive on the left here, so the throttle hand is closest to the centre line. Nevertheless all waving is done with the left hand, I usually just lift it off the handle grip 6 inches or so, palm forward all fingers up and rotate hand to the left a little, takes all of a second. I wave to all, sport bikes, hardleys, even 50cc scooters. Bikes are not that common in NZ. Even most patched gang members on their hardleys and trumpies will wave back.
That being said if I am in traffic round town, I will usually only nod as I need my hands on the controls, not so many bikes on the road means drivers not so used to looking for bikes...

ridinr to work every day on 59 south i stay on the left lane. its easier to have the cell phone talkers on the right and an escape route onthe righ.the bikes i see are on the HOV lane coming towards me .only the young sports bikes will make an attempt to reply . the old farts dont give a- .the bigger the bike sounds the less they respond. i ll wave any way its safe ,sometimes with both hands.its thumbs-up for a Valk or an ST .air horn and a wink for the babes. enjoy |

saw a really cute one last year......was passing a group of Beamers on a two lane out of Bellville Tx and I waved.....as each would pass I would wave and they would wave back. Then towards the end of the line I waved at a bike and he pushed a button and a life size plastic hand with all five fingers and spring loaded popped up and was waving back and forth as he passed....ha. real cute, got a chuckle from me.

somewhere between rp62 and willow on this one. I Always wave if I see a bike and its safe to do so. When passing a bike on the left if its safe I lock the throttle and say hi with the right hand. When passing harleys that are road hogging in the left lane I do not wave as I dont like a road hog any more than a person on a cell phone who is driving I seem to miss the opportunity to wave at a lot of bikes when I am paying attention in heavy traffic, like on the Cross Bronx Expressway where you are dodging trucks and others vehicles intent on mayhem, maybe thats a good thing but if there is a bike across the median I give a high wave so they can see it and its almost always returned heartily by either the rider and or the passenger If I have passed a speed trap on one or two lanes I will tap my helmet which gets a thank you wave back, always glad to help a brother avoid a speed appreciation award. This confuses Gman as our signal for he forgot (again) to turn off his blinkers is the head tap followed by the air horn if he goes a few more miles with the darn thing blinking away Apparently I am his blinker buddy, Guess what oss is asking Cher to be getting you for chanukah Gman? |
