I have a son in the Marine Corps. He's stations in San Diego. Just texted me and said he just got back from a 9 day "field op" in the hills, whatever that is.

Well, depending on what his MOS is, it could have been a good time, it may not have been.

To answer your question, I've got one in the Army and one that just got back from Iraq as a contractor.  My son tried to join and was medically discharged.  He still wanted to go so he found a job that took him there.  He was on a Marine base at Fallujah.  My daughter is in the Army and getting ready to deploy. cooldude

My stepson is in the Army and just deployed ,AGAIN, to Afghanistan. tickedoff  3 tours in Iraq, one in Pakistan, and a couple of others.  Field op sounds like a long hike, and a training mission.  Thats just a guess.  Please pray for all our troops.

If you are asking what are "Field OPs" then what that means is his unit when out to some area and practiced doing their job in a live simulated situation.

For example, AV-8 Harriers sometimes go to MCB Camp Pendleton CA to practice close combat landings and take offs.  They use an area that may simulate a landing zone close to the front lines and that's called "Going to the Field".  They take their maintenance people also to train and to repair the aircraft.

If you are asking about going to the hills, he probably ment MCB Camp Pendleton CA unless they are doing winter training and that would be MCB Bridgeport, CA.

If you are trying to read anything else into this from your son, Marines train all the time for combat and field situations as well as the other branches of services.  It is why we are as good as we are as a military force.

Yea, Being an ex Navy man I wasn't familiar with the term "Field Ops". He thinks I know the Marine jargon, some of it I do and some of it I don't. I went to sea and he went to the Field.

Well Sir, anytime you need help with that Marine Jargon let us know.

It equates to sea trails.

Remember many of our terms were developed from our close association with the Navies natical terminology.

One of my 3 sons has already served in the Army. His last official act was helping pick up the pieces of the shuttle that blew up over East Texas. He was a paratrooper that never got into combat. To all of you that have daughters and sons serving a big thank you and well done from an ex Navy airedale. Reb-i KNOW exactly how important the "grapes" are. U S S Yorktown C V S 10-2 tours.
