Yesterday while parking my bike I noticed the kickstand was loose.  The hex bolt that attaches to the spring hook was broken at the 6 mm threads.  I have a 1999 Valkyrie I/S with only 15800 miles.  Does this happen very often?  I took off the old spring hook as they call it in the parts book and ordered a new one, but I welded a new 6 mm thread on this old one so I can use my bike.  New one will be a spare I guess.

Fairly common problem, and the repacement part is quite reasonbly priced.

I had to replace mine a couple of weeks ago. On the advice of others on this board, I carry a spare spring, spring hook and nut in my tool bag.  If stand won't stay up, the engine will kill when the bike is put in gear.

When my spring let go and shot off into the wild blue yonder of somewhere to be unfound...my stand fell, bike would cut off. I wrapped a bungee cord around it and held it over my shoulder to get myself home.  Common problem. Have a plan B in mind.

Be careful with that... Several years ago we had a ride in and a guy had a problem with his spring slipping off and the stand dropping down on him... He tried a "field expedient" repair to keep the stand up...

...the repair failed him on his way home, the stand dropped down while he was taking a sweeper, and leveraged the bike up and off the road... Killed him instantly, put his wife into a coma...

Not trying to be Mr. Doom and Gloom, but, just be careful out there...

Hey Bonnyair , My kick stand did the same thing , its that cheap pot metal bolt under neath ..... take the old bolt  to your hardware store and match it up with a grade 8 metric bolt like I did that oem bolt ain't going to cut it  .... and now I keep a spare bolt , spring and kickstand JUST IN CASE !it ain't no fun  riding around without a kickstand , I know ....

speaking of kick stands.....we've noticed the 98 Tourer i bought Sherry last May.....leans over considerably FURTHER than my 97 Tourer when on the kickstand. It leans over so much, that on some slanted parking lots, Sherry struggles to get the bike up off the stand.

i have looked underneath to see if i can see any OBVIOUS difference between her Valk and mine....but so far, i can't see anything OBVIOUS.

so, IS THIS.........a common kick stand problem? And, regardless if common or not, WHAT........may be causing her bike to lean over much more than most other Valks on the kick stand?

Not wanting to hijack this thread....just........keep forgetting to ask you guys THIS question!!!!!!

Look and see if someone has added washers under the two bolts. Some people loosen the two bolts underneath and slide 2 washers when they run a 205/55/16 car tire. You can add either side to raise or lower the side stand.

Check to see if her suspension is set up different. The bike may set up higher causing it to lean more

no car tire on THIS bike....trust me. It was owned by an older gentleman up in Huntsville....nothing but stock. i'll check the suspension. My Valk is set on the setting for the most weight....even thuogh i ride solo all the time. I set it like that for clearance in corners. I never have checked her setting. But, i know mine set on "high"....doesn't lean near as much as hers..........

still.........i'll check the suspension setting..............

i keep wondering if somehow something got bent under there from a previous owner? you can tell...looking UNDERNEATH...that this bike has been down ON BOTH SIDES...at one time or another. Wondering if somehow they could have bent something or messed something up when it went down???

Shock settings........check them tonight.............

I experience the same thing with my InterState leaning too much until I replaced the 13" shocks with 12".  It made a big difference.

I had picked up a Tourer many moons ago and it leaned considerably more than my Standard. It had Prgressive front springs and rear. I had bought one of them Rivco kickstand pod/foot jobs to increase the levelage a bit. Definitely helped but about as attractive as a Russell Day Long Saddle.

I'd guess suspension vs damage.

update...

her shocks (rear) were set to 4....same as mine (i thought i had mine on 5....but nope, mine is at 4 too). she has the SAME DUnlop E3 tires as mine. Stock shocks. No washers or mods to kickstand mounting.

Identical.....

But, with both bikes on kickstands.....handlebars pointed identical.....this is what i MEASURE....

her bike, on the NON kickstand/right side...sits about a little OVER A HALF INCH HIGHER.......than my bike.
her bike, on the kickstand/left side..........site a little UNDER A HALF INCH LOWER.......than my bike

it's not a huge difference...but you can see it...and on certain pakring slopes...really FEEL it.

so, frame damage from previous owner? Shock broke or something? Shocks seem to function normal. Look normal. Bike rides fine....sits "level"/normal.

I just don't know what this is from!

When the kickstands are up, are they in the same location?   Are they the same length?

i'll check that tonight. one thing we did notice...we looked at both kickstands while down...and while they LOOK the same basically....we did notice mine sits absolutely flat on the "foot" part. Hers....seems to NOT QUITE sit absolutley flat. you could slip a piece of cardboard under the outer end of her "foot" on her kickstand. NOT so on mine. It is flat and sits perfectly flat on the entire foot section on the ground. hers seems to be making contact on the 2/3 of the foot closest to the bike...but the 1/3 of the foot furthest from the bike seems to be sitting up just a little bit?

while i don't see an obvious bend in the kick stand...i do wonder...could it be slightly bent? Could the previous owner possilby have trailered this bike with the kick stand DOWN ( a big time no-no for us Trailer Queens who know better!!!!!!!!!!)???

Look and see if the angle of the casting which bolts to the crossmember is the same between the bike viewed from the side. Most common reason for the kickstand being too upright (other then shocks being changed) is the casting has hit a curb, or trailer ramp during loading/unloading and the crossmember is twisted.

Has any of your bikes ever been on a trailer where the casting might have been hit?

RedValk, my 98 Tourer does the same as your Wife`s. Out tip stands off the ground a little. I have ordered a Rivco Side Stand Pad from CruiserCustomizing that fits a VTX 1800 hoping that the sidestand are the same on the two bikes.  Undecided I`ll post if it works.  Wink

Raymond, i have looked underneath a couple of times...compared her bike to mine...and i can't see anything visually that would lead me to think that casting is bent...etc. BUT..........i have also noted this bike has been down apparently....from the previous owner(s)....on BOTH sides. ie...BOTH headers on BOTH sides have some dents ....BOTH sides of the case savers have some scrapes...both saddle bags on the bottom have some scrapes. So this bike has been down at LEAST once in a previous life...and has some minor damage on BOTH sides.

So no telling if something else has been damaged too? but i can't see anything visual so far. I'm going to follow up on Craig's suggestion and check both kick stands while up tonight. i also checked all the bolts for tightness on the mounts for the kick stands. i've just rarely seen a Valk sit so far over as this one does. Up on Cheaha...there are some parking areas on slopes where even I struggle to get her bike back upright for her (and i've never had that problem with my Valk).

We can live with this...obviously....BUT...if there is some easy to moderate cure, i'd love to "fix" it........
