If you are looking for a cheap alternative to the Honda oil filter. There are two subsitutes that are available at walmart. The ST6607 and ST7317. I would recommend the 7317 due to it being a larger filter with more element. The 6607 looks like something that would go on a lawnmower. Walmart is phasing out the ST filters so it would be a good idea to stock up. At $2.84 per piece you can buy 7 for the price of one honda filter... Roll Eyes
The filter sizes are as follows: the 6607 is about 2 1/4" long and doesnt have a very large filtration element but would work well if the bottom part of your front fender is uncomfortably close to the filter. (you just may need to change it more often) Hondas standard filter is the next longest being approx 3" long. (just for comparison) The 7317 is my choice. It is approx. 3 1/4" long which in turn means greater filtration area. I still have plenty of clearance between the top of the filter & the bottom of the front fender. Supertech placed in the top 8 of oil filters reviewed so its a very good filter for the money.
fordmano has an excellent method to beautify the filters to cover that ugly black look. So i did the same thing.  cooldude I bought 4 filters which should last me awhile and they look excellent....

so if oil change is on your winter "to do" list get by wally world and pick up a few while they still have them.

I just posted two days ago (?) that I talked with the auto dept. manager and according to him they are NOT, repeat NOT phasing out the super tech filters...Super tech is re-packaging their stuff, so new cardboard, and maybe a new price but should be on the shelves the first week or so in March.

The only other filter on our wally world shelve is Fram. If I am not mistaken WW is a point of sale type system meaning that stock is automatically being ordered when a PAR level requirement is reached. If  they are not phasing them out, why don't I see different filter boxes coming out taking their place?  Like I sated before, our store only has about 5 ST filter sizes on the shelve at this time. The rest is all Fram.

I was told that the Manufacture didn't have them available yet..3 more weeks..I sure hope that is the case, been using those filters since I got my bike as well as using them in my cars/trucks.

At our local World of Wally, they sell a FRAM filter # 6017-A. It is a nice Chrome filter. I have never bought a Honda filter for my 98 std. Curt

I do not see that printed anywhere on the box or the filter. but you're right....1500 would definitely suck. Sad  don't want to put synthetic oil in and have to change filters three time during the life of the oil.

cooldude Thanks for the Mention "cajundood", I sure am glad someone out there is listening and using what little I am able to pass on.  Like I had said before this method ain't perfect and it obviuosly ain't CHROME, but the shiny silver aluminum look is a ton better looking than that black with the factory stickers hanging out the front of our FatLadies front end. Cool

That is what I need to go do this weekend, buy all those ST filters on my local shelves just incase they do stop them for some reason.

Maybe EMCO stopped printed that 1500 mile limit "suggestion" on their boxes, but I saw it only a month or so ago.  Of course, I don't know how long the filter had been in stock.

I was at our local wally world yesterday getting oil and a filter for my focus and noticed that they have the 6607 and 7317 filters in stock.  There was probably a half dozen or so of each on the shelf and priced at 2.84 seems like a good deal for a bike filter.  The last factory honda filter I bought at the dealer was almost 12 bux.  That oil change cost me close to $50 time I got the bel-ray oil and the filter....now my brother and I buy the filters by the case from western honda for a little less than 7.50 a piece.

It has been mentioned many times that the super tech filter works just as well as the factory filter but I feel the 4 dollars saved on an oil filter compared to what I have invested in the bike ($6K) isn't going to make it or break it every oil change for me....I'll stick with the factory filters.

As many of you are doing your pre-season service, there's been some posts on oil filters.

Anyone run over an item in the road?  There's been a few unavoidable hits in my riding past, the most recent was a shower door.  I've had no real damage, yet.

The Valkyrie oil filter looks in position to take a hit.  Low and up front.  Ever known one to be damaged?  Is some sort of cover or guard worth considering?  Is there a filter with a flimsy exterior that should be avoided?

Thanks / Pluggy
Pluggy, Some of us use a beer or soda pop can cut to fit. You can puncture the bottom easy enough to drain the contents, to drink or course. The cans today can be cut with a pair of household scissors. This method is very cost effective and a good conversation topic. You can search a previous about this subject.

When I bought my 99 std, I did all my maint just to be sure. The PO had OVERTIGHTENED the oil filter. my strap wrench was slipping, and my oil filter pliers were just mangling the case. Ended up punching a hole in it with a punch but played hell doing it.  I'd think that if a piece of debris had enough a$$ to trash a filter, then the filter would be the least of your concerns...

Will the ST7317 fit the chrome filter cover/covers available for the Valk? Are they the right length or too long?

There was a guy on the Road Star forum a few years back who did a pretty detailed study on the Super Tec filters and, bottom line, they appeared to be as good a filter, if not better, than anything out there.
The same company that makes the ST filters make a couple of the famous brand filter whose names I can't recall now.
The Wallmart ST filters were the only ones I used in my Road Star.

ST6607 52 sq in of media. same size as OEM
ST3717 62 sq in of media same dia 1/2 longer then OEM
ST3593A 160 sq in of media larger dia but shorter than ST3717
all of the above have the required 8-11 psi by-pass valve.

I have used the ST3593A
presently use the Pure1 in the same size.

good fine T.P.

this cut open claims 119.25 square inches for the ST3593A. some earlier posts on bobistheoilguy had the 160 sq in, but it was never confirmed during the post thread. now we know its not that much. still the size filter I use.

My measurements:

3593a: 2-1/4" by 43-3/8" ~= 97-5/8 square inches.

7317: 2-1/4" by 38-1/4" ~= 86-1/16 square inches.

~= 12.5 % difference in the total surface area of filtering media.

Hey CA

The guy claims 97-5/8 square inches,  not 119.25   ???

tp, that is from the link I provided from '04, your link is '06. pretty close

I checked my notes/copies of web sites from '04, the 160 sq in for the ST3593A was assumed due to this filter being the same size/replacement as a Wix 51344  which had been cut open and reported to be 165 to 170 sq in. of filter media.  this was from postings on bobistheoilguy.com
I remember somebody cutting open the longer ST compared to the stock size ST replacement for the valkyrie and found that the can was just bigger, filter media was the same size for both.

Don't go cheap man with your oil filter!  Get the best and NEVER replace it.  Check out K&P Engineering out of Denver.  They make a stainless steel and billet aluminum oil filter that pushes oil thru 7 times faster than paper filters resulting in a cooler running engine.  I know my bike temps are lower because I have a oil temp reading dip stick.  You may even get some more ponies out of your scoot. This filter is cleaned using a solvent, aerosol carb cleaner or plan old gas.  Expensive - yes, BUT you never replace it. Chrome is the way to go.  www.kandpengineering.com is where you want to go.  Be sure to check out the SEMA show drag bike video on their website.  These filters are certified by the FAA for aircraft and are also used by NASCAR.  This is a USA made product.  Good luck and you'll thank me later.

They are gone! Don't know about the rest of the Walmarts, but at mine there are no more Supertech filters of any kind/size. They have been removed completely. Next closest thing is Frams which are $5.

There is a WM 30 miles from our town. I was in that area (across a state line) and remembered the filter shortage. Went in this store and found 3 of the 7317's bought all 3.

Yep the supertech filters are now gone at our local wally world now too.  A few weeks ago they had 3 or 4 of each the 6607 and the 7317 filters on the shelf along with a few other ST filters.  The other day I had to pick up a jug of oil for her car and noticed that the shelf was cleaned off and no more ST filters of any kind left.  Guess I should have bought a couple for future reference tickedoff tickedoff

Not that I had an issue with the ST filters but Purolator makes an excellent quality filter.

I use the oversized pure-one PL14459.

The 14459 is what I use on my Accord.
The 14610 which is spec'd for a Civic is what I use on my Valk.

I usually wait until they have a sale ($5) and then order $50 worth of Pure One filters from the Advance Auto web site using the PAYPAL or A123 code for $20 off and then pick up at store.

Enough filters for a year for all our vehicles.

That gets them for about $3 each.

I just posted two days ago (?) that I talked with the auto dept. manager and according to him they are NOT, repeat NOT phasing out the super tech filters...Super tech is re-packaging their stuff, so new cardboard, and maybe a new price but should be on the shelves the first week or so in March.
EXCELLENT!  cooldude carry on then..... cooldude
(shows what the bozos at my local walmart know)
HMMM....what happened here??? I guess the bozos at my local walmart were right after all.. uglystupid2

Just went into Wally World today, NO Super tech  filters, but do have the Purolator, so it seems that your Wally World bozo's are better than my Wally World bozo's...

Thanks T.P.    That was a good enough article for me to try a ST7317. I just hope an MGD can will fit over it. Smiley

L14610 is the new Purolator Classic it is the replacement for the ST7317

L14612 is the new Purolator Classic it is the replacement  for the ST6607 ( this is the shorter filter)

the Purolator Pure one filters start out with PL and WW does not carry those.  T.P.
