Im looking at a interstate with a supercharger anyone have any experiance with one, does it effect reliability of the motor and just how much faster is it. Can you put the carbs back on and retain horsepower, Im under the impression that pistons would be changed also, just need some feed back to see if anyone here has had experiance with this system, Thanks

I remember back in the ol'days when the Valkyrie was still being made some folks had some major issues with the pistons coming unglued. Heat is also a problem....Don't think I'd care to have one unless it was for bike night sure would'nt trust one on a long road trip....Just my opinion

A lot of folks have had problems with the supercharged bikes. I remember reading about too much boost and broken pistons. Some have had no problems. A few have built their own fuel injection system too.

Prefere to keep my I/S stock with piggies, has more power than I need as it is, no problem getting on busy interstate. If it works why fix it.

I looked at supercharging my 02 Standard, spoke to several folks that had done it. First and foremost I was warned to not exceed 4 lbs of boost with stock pistons. If you get into that SC, you're gonna use a lot more fuel. If you really want to talk to some SC pros, call Roger at R&M Works, Inc. I can get you his phone number or you can google his shop. Sludge here on the forum is also someone I'd recommend talking to about SCs.

KICKED LOTS OF ASSES.. had sTock pistons.. from what i read i was lucky i had no piston problems.. sold it b4 I did.. also extremely hard starting below 50 degrees... was reealy fun but also kind of a PITA.. doesnt like regular gas either.. contact Jeff K. on the tech board.. he's the resident expert.. would i do it again?? prolly NOT

I have a standard with a super charger and know another VRCC'r in Iowa, R J Miles, with the same. Both of us have had ours for only a season. That said, I believe that the current wisdom is that if you limit the boost to 6-7 psi with stock pistons and do something to limit the ignition advance under boost - or - use a real octane booster, then you'll be fine. I have an aftermarket ignition that retards my ignition under boost. RJ uses an octane booster, with the stock ignition module AND has a 6 degree trigger wheel and he's fine. They do tend to get warm (hot?) in the summer in slow traffic. We both have the later SC's without the J-tube and we both have the Mikuni HSR-45 carburetor. These are easy to tune and run quite well from idle to max without a lot of surging. I also have a stock IS and it feels like it's running on three cylinders compared to the SC'd version.

I took mine out today when it was in the mid 30's. I had to keep the choke on for the first 10 minutes of riding. The choke in the HSR-45 carb is designed to taper out as the throttle is increased so it isn't picky about exactly where it's set. I believe that many of the problems with SC's was due to the older J-tube and carburetor design. That's why the newer versions were made. By the way I get 30 mpg both on the highway and in town. It doesn't seem to matter. I have an IS tank so I have no complaints about the range.

Thanks guys, I first thought it might be fun, but if theirs been that many problems with them then I really dont have the money or time to have to rebuild it after the melt down. If I bought it, This would be my only street bike, I think I will pass, I dont know the guy, but if someones interested the bike is in houston tx. $8500 craigslist

Wow. Lots of people with little first hand info, offering lots of opinions. I have about 100,000 miles on the supercharger. I have never had a breakdown related to the supercharger. I've been across the US several times in all kinds of weather. Never once had a blower related problem. In fact, the only time my bike has needed a tow in 130,000 miles is from a blown U joint on the way to IZ in Paduka. Yes I did break pistons. I was drag racing Dragbars on the Dyno at IZ and I started blowing oil out the breather. But I rode it home from Zanesville to Jacksonville, and then several months after. I was running 10 psi boost then and am running 12 now. Pibit Rode his probably 100,000 miles all over Canada and the US. There are a few of us that ride supercharged bikes, and not just to the bar. Mine is not the typical Supercharged Valk. It has been Whipped to a froth, and I wouldn't think twice about jumping on it tomorrow and heading out for a month or two. But a car tire? None for me thanks. I wouldn't ride one to the bar more less across the country.

I only saw 1 opinion that seemed a little off.. smokin the tire at any speed.. the others seemed legit to me.. but I do recognize you as 1 of the valk blower gods Jeff.. I would say bottom line for anyone interested. if you dont mind messin around dialin it in then maybe go for it.. but if ya wanna just go get on a bike and ride without doin yer homework...keep it stock
