Just get rid of the frame and box springs RJ.... that way when you roll out of bed, you only have a few inches to fall.

For all my college years in dorms and cheap basement rentals, moving around several times a year, I just had a single mattress.... less stuff to move.

I hear ya Jess, but after living in foxholes for a year and a half, I'll put up with the box springs and the mattress.

We must be from the same mother.

I was also told kids are to be seen not heard.

If I piped off, I was usually picking my ass up off of the floor or ground, depending if I was in the house or outside.

You didn't back talk anyone and had respect for your elders, I still do. I still open doors for people and say: yes maaaaam  and no sir. My mother would whip my or my 2 brothers asses in a heartbeat...I never heard: "wait till your dad gets home". My mom wasn't a a big woman, but she scared the hell outa me when I was a youngster and took care of business when it was necessary. I grew to repect my mother  a whole lot.  It wasn't a verbal count to 3 like parents do now,  Cheesy  we got told once and that was it.
Or the thing you hear the most now is a threat without action, pisses me off. But hey, they aren't my kids and I don't have to deal with em anymore!   cooldude

My 2 youngest g'daughters, were told by their mommy about the 1st time I watched them, you do what g'pa says or suffer the consequences.

She said they shrugged their shoulders and came on in the house.

Headed directly for the TV.     I said whoa, wait a minute, that, TV is off limits.

Youngest one looked at me and spouted something off that I couldn't understand.   Told her the TV was off limits for the rest of the day and tonight for both of ya.   Other one she jumped in and said I didn't do anything wrong so why am I limited to the TV.     I said because of what you are doing right now.

So, I set them down and told them NO TV while we eat, you clean up your plate before you can get up from the table, and then you have to ask to be excused 1st.      Youngest one said aw BS Grandpa, we aren't used to this kind of rough treatment.     Told her, you and your sister better get used to it.   If one of ya screws up, ya both suffer.

Their mom has a crap fit with them, they come over here for a meal or to stay all night, you will not find 2 better behaved kids in your life, and very well mannered, even if it is a family dinner.    I think it was 3 years ago, all the kids were in town for Christmas.   I rented our American Legion Hall for the occurrence and had HY-Vee (grocery chain) cater the food and do all the clean up.

We all set down to one big long table, and someone said Grace, and when they Amen came all the other g'kids stood up and started digging in.   All I said is WHOA.    Everyone set down and I said, you pick up a plate in front of you, take what you will eat, and pass it on.    I was a little bit behind the youngest g'daughter and she leaned over to her cousin and said, watch your step around g'pa, he is strict and when he says something he means it.

What is funny, none of the kids except the older daughter's kids behave and go by g'pa's rules.

I think I only swatted one of my kids on the butt growing up.   That was my youngest daughter, who's kids got in trouble with me, told her mother to go get screwed under her breath and I heard it.    She really got her butt beat.   Never heard any of that out of her mouth again.

Yup, we was "raised up" the same. RESPECT! A lost art....Don't see that anymore. Too busy countin to 3 and making idle threats. I do however see it (respect) more in the south than I ever do in the north.

My grandson's were are the house, X3. One from my daughter and two from my son. Brandon is the eldest followed not too far behind by Robbie and Dylan. I had all three and they were out on the deck talking. At the time they were 5 and 6 year old. I called out to the deck from inside the house for Robbie to come in the house. He didn't answer me. I called again, and nothing...AS I approached the deck I heard Brandon tell Robbie, "you better answer Papa, cause if ya don't, he'll beat your ass"! I laughed and went back in the house so they wouldn't hear me.

When I got over it I went to the deck and asked Robbie to come in. He said: "I was comming Papa, didn't want to get my ass beat". I was done at that point.

1 of my older grandkids was over like 30 years ago.      He came in the house when his dad dropped him off and parked in front of the TV.

Asked him what was going on and he said I'm watching my favorite TV show.   So I asked if it was customary at home to come in, change the channel and set down.  He said yup, I said not in this house, especially if someone is watching something else.

He responded, with well, grandpa, at my house everybody knows that is my favorite and it is mine to watch.     Told him to change it back and come here.    Handed him a knife and said you know the sequence now.

He looked me in the eye and said, oh crap, I'm in trouble now.     Then he said ya want the willow or off of the lilac bush?     Told him to give me the knife and go help grandma with supper.  He said YES SIR, I'd be glad to help and not get a whippin from you.      Never ever had a problem with him, now he is married and has 5 kids, and they all respect grandpa' wishes to the 'T', and tell me they love me everytime they show up or leave for home.     The oldest one is married, and told his wife one time, 'keep ur firkin mouth shut unless spoken to around grandpa, or he will probably smack your butt royally for ya.

All I will say, is NONE of the kids or grand kids have been into DRUGS, and that includes the one GREAT G'son.   He is a terror but he'd have your back if needed.

He is the one who got chased home from school by a kid 2 grades ahead of him.   His dad had a talk with him, and the next day, he told the kid don't even think of chasing me home tonight.     I'll kick your ass if ya do, kid tried to and got a good ass whompin and the g'son got suspended 3 days from school for fighting on the school grounds.     His suspension ended and he let the kid get a block from school and kicked his ass again and told him that was for making him get a suspension.

School has changed their rules now, if you are fighting, all involved will get a 3 day suspension.

Thats some good stuff! I took a kid home for retail fraud once. (well more than once but this one is different) I walked him to the door where we stopped and I knocked on the door. He said: "you don't to knock I live here"! I told him: "well I don't so I will knock".
His folks came to the door and asked what was up? I told them I had arrested their kid for retail fraud in a store downtown. The father looked at the kid and said: Is this true"?
The kid looked at his dad and said: "F**k off" and walked by both of them. The father said to the mother: "see, I can't do a thing with him"! I said: well I can, but you better call a dentist cause he is gonna need one".
The kid an obvious juvenile then. He ended up in jail on his 17th birthday for larceny in a building. I got the honor of arresting him  cooldude and enjoyed every minute of it!  Evil

At almost 81 years old, I still have all my teeth except for 4.    That is the reason I'm so dumb, they extracted my smart teeth.

Mom & Dad both had take em out and put em in a glass at night teeth.

My step dad, he had an upper plate.    It was fun to watch him set in his chair and take a nap.     His upper plate was always about 1/2 out of his mouth.   Someone would scare him awake and he'd almost spit that plate clear across the living room floor.     If mom was around, I got my arse whipped up royally and then set on a silver plate to heal.

It was worth it to see those teeth go flying.     LOL.

You ask, would I do it again, you bet your shirt on it I would if he was still alive.

OH PS:       The crown is back in.     It was in good shape for being almost 40 years old.    Dentist said it was made of out a better quality of gold than these gold crowns of today.
