Its been waaaaaaay too long since I have been here, but here it goes.  If you do not want to get involved in a ENGINE OIL question please stop reading now!  My rememberer is not what it used to be, last year I did some research on oil here and landed on a Mobile 1 synthetic, but I do not remember which one?  I have been riding my '97 since '98, but back in those days it was called "red cap", then I used the Rotella synthetic for a few years until last year when I went back to the "I can't remember the cap color"!  I like to use a heavier oil when I can because we ride the most during the summer months, a little in the spring and fall, but the majority when it is hotter.  Thanks for helping the remembering challenged!  Oh, I did remember to write down the oil filter number, so I picked that up today!

Mobil 1 has gotten a bit more complicated in recent years. Look on the back of the bottle and look for a double circle. It has the API service ratings in the top half. If the bottom half says "Energy Conserving" don't use it. It has Moly in it and might cause the clutch to slip. The bottom half has to be blank in order to use it in a wet clutch engine. M 1"s high mileage is OK as are some of the truck oils.

Several years ago the cap on a Mobil 1 bottle indicated the weight.  Red was 15W-50 and green was 10W30, and there were some others I can't remember.  They stopped doing that, maybe because there are so many weights now that they ran out of colors!  Many still refer to the 15W-50 as 'red cap', and I think there's still some red on the label that indicates that particular weight.

Some of the auto parts stores around here carry motorcycle specific Mobil synthic oil. If I'm not running Rottella then that's what I run. It's pricey but I know it's safe.

+1   cooldude  states on the bottle "Optimized wet-clutch performance" or something similar.

I have used the 15-50 mobile one, (that used to have a red cap) for 100000 miles and still have the original clutch in good operating condition.  Nuf said.  Hoser   cooldude

What Hoser said and MGM has 242K+ miles original clutch.   For 6 years, I tugged trailers along behind on trips.

Indeed there is still red on the label.
