they say a cat has nine lives, not sure about humans. not intentionally trying to be morbid but I got to thinking today about the several times I have rubbed deaths elbow.

1, got zapped by 220 and 110, electricity sucks
2, nearly crushed by a pepsi truck when I was two (totaled my tricycle)
3, within 10 feet of hitting a gas tanker that pulled out in front of my dynamic 88 (bad brakes on my part)
4, went over the side of a hill in Virginia with my uncle, we were just short of rolling it over into a 150 foot very steep hillside. no seat belts (seat belts? you kidding? it's a farm we don' need no stinking seat belts) we would have been ejected.
5 once or twice on a motorcycle, we all know those occasions don't we?

maybe I should start slowing down  Undecided

Im an electrican and have been hit by 277 and 480 and still here to talk about it. Now i have a habit of checking every high volt wire with a meter before i think about touching it. The 277 was my fault, stupid operator error, in a hurry. The 480 was because an idiot turned the breaker on even though it was locked and tagged out. Luckly my elbo was grounded.

On the U S S Yorktown on my first night shift by myself came as close to a turning prop on a Grumman S 2 E as you can get WITHOUT going thru it. Totaled out a couple of cars i was driving on the highway. Had a really interesting ride in my 2nd stock car at a track in Waukegan Il that no longer exists. And a couple of close encounters of almost the worst kind with cages. Got dumped out of a race boat about 60-65 miles an hour. I had absolutely no idea the human body could bounce that many times on water. I know i'm missing a couple. RIDE SAFE.

Having been taken to the circus the day before, I tried to tight rope walk the clothesline in the basement at age five.  The concrete broke my fall, and fortunately I landed on my hardest part, my head.

Some years later, fired a .44 mag into a soft earthen berm (behind the target),  and got a perfect ricochet inches from my hardest part (felt the breeze).

I think everyone has had a close call we can recall on the bikes, other than that I've hit several tree's on my dirt bike, hurt so bad I thought every boone in my body was broke. The worst one for me was Getting shot in the leg thru a truck bed with a 7 mm thought I was dead that day. Survived it with two weeks in the hospital 3 surgerys and missed 4 months work, was a really bad day.

3 years ago I hit a telephone pole with a snowmobile.....

Last I saw on the speedo it was passing 70 mph.......

Hit a large bump in the trail and it launched....

Hit the pole with the left side of the sled about 6 feet off the ground......

I went to the right side of the pole... And landed about 50 feet away...

Only in ICU for 24 hrs....

Fracture vertebrae ad a torn Quad muscle.... Ultra lucky Back to normal in like 8 weeks

Year later, Dad rear ended my new to me Valk..... nice dent in my helmet when I hit the pavement on my back.... knocked the bike right out from under me. Bike was totaled but I brought it back to the road..

Oh and have been t-boned in a 76 Vega by a drunk driver... they think he was going 50 or so.... but he wasnt talking with the engine in his lap.....  just a few bruises

Those were the last...... I hope, but I still live...... and Ride

Probably the closest I've came when I wasn't riding was answering my front door in the 70's and finding myself facing a double barrel 12 gauge in the hands of a very angry and intoxicated acquaintance. I was barefoot, no shirt, half asleep and he was too far away for me to grab the barrel without dying. Since I couldn't reach the gun I just said, "that's bullshit Ski, come on in and have a beer", then I turned my back on him and walked into the kitchen to get him a beer with my skin crawling. When I turned around he was there with the gun still pointing at me, I sat him a beer down on the table, grabbed one for myself and sat down on the other side.

Turned out he wasn't even mad at me, he was mad at a buddy of mine but I was the only one he knew how to find. We had a few beers, he cooled down and left and all was good. But when I was walking into the kitchen, I expected to die. I was 21 at the time, lived life on the edge and loved it that way. I partied with him several times after that and we both kept our cool. But, if he'd been standing 2' closer when I opened the door, life would have changed for both of us.

Every morning I wake up closer to death than I've ever been before, and further from birth.

There was a time shortly after meeting a lady in a Ford I thought I had arrived.  It was a false alarm.

It's coming, on its own terms in its own time.  I believe I'm ready but I'm a bit concerned about the living between now and then, whenever that may be.

Oh, and then there was that time I was sure I had died and gone to Heaven.  That one was a false alarm also.   Wink

She was stopped in the passing lane that morning and I noticed I was going 85 when I saw her. We both walked out of that one. My wife came and drove me home from that one. Guess I better keep the wife around, or I wont have a ride. Grin Grin. Fell off dirt bikes so many times I can't remember then all. NO I never hit my head, I'm just too old to remember 2funny. 1.Hit from behind by a drunk in a Maverick who was doing 70 while I was sitting in the back seat of my friends new ‘70 Chevelle who was stopped to make a left turn.
2.Darn near killed myself doing a wheelie on a 450 Honda.
3.Darn near killed myself again trying to kick start an 850 Norton Commando.
4.And again learning to ride a 400 Yamaha dirt bike.
5.Dumped a ’75 Kawasaki after drinking way, way, too much alcohol at a bar waiting for the rain to stop. Fortunately at 25 on the last turn before home and not at the 125 I was doing on the highway,
6.Rolled a fire truck over once. Back surgery 20 years later. The truck didn't make it.

A lot of beer, then a late night drive on the Highway between Birmingham and Anniston AL in the 60's, trying to stay between the white lines, when I followed the two that went off to the right. Tried to hold it on the road, but got too tired and let go of the wheel. Down the embankment where the left rear wheel became embedded in mud & stopped my Austin Healey Sprite from going any further. Had to crawl up the hill on my hands & knees, but not a scratch. Caught a ride to Pell City & called a friend for a ride.  When we came back 2 days later to get the car, we couldn't see it until we were in the breakdown lane. It was steep, the mud had kept it from rolling down the long hillside. We hooked up a tow chain to my friend's Plymouth, and I decided to steer the Sprite from outside the car because I was afraid it'd roll over. but it only rolled over my foot. Once we got it to the top, I was told by some onlooker that we'd have to have it towed since the right front bumper and fender were pushed right into the wheel. I sat down & pulled them both out by hand enough to drive it (a real piece of crap), then used the tow chain around a post to get it more even.

In the 70's in downtown Boston, carjacked (they didn't call it that then) robbed & raped. Another woman was raped that day and was found dead.

Neither of those things will ever happen to me again, put me down for 7...

Many years ago, I got broad sided by a dump truck that ran a red light as I was passing through the intersection. I don't even remember the impact. I briefly woke up in the ambulance and passed out again. Fractured hip, a couple of broken ribs and all kinds of cuts. Hip still bothers me to this day and that's the main reason I'm on a trike.

yeah, that one doesn't make sense to me.  if it were locked correctly, you shouldn't have been able to apply power. if i'm ever doing anything on the main buss bar, the main breaker coming into the building has my lock on it, plus, there's going to be NO WAY anyone else can get power to what i'm working on unles they run an extension cord!!

i blacked out once while lighting a pilot light on a 40 gallon steam jacket cooking pot, i reached around to push the button, while looking at the piot light, kneeling in a puddle of water, accidently grabbed the 120v control power terminals (i was 21).....  that one hirt the worst!!  was wiring up a flow control valve on a 10" water line for a fire alarm system, reached around the pipe and accidently grabbed the 120v alarm wiring, that was funny 'cause it made me throw my screw driver 30' when i jumped!! got zapped with some serious static at work, felt my heart quiver, that one scared the poop out of me!! was supose to ride with some highschool friends going to a party, they left after i did, they never made it to the party, wrapped their car around a power line pole splitting it in half, had anyone been in the back seat they would have been killed, three guys all sitting up front, no one hurt, i would have been in the back seat......  one time while delivering "sauce" (long story), i decided to not go to an account because there was a blizzard coming and i wanted to get home before the roads got worse.  made it home alright, but later found out that there was a horrific accident where a logging truck jack knifed shooting logs down the highway hitting on coming traffic like missles.   several people were killed, i would have been right in the thick of it had i not changed my route that day.  oh, yeah, then again i've had the usual idiot pull out in front of me with out looking while i rode my cycle, that's kind of a given.....  couple of car accidents, nothing serious, other then that, pretty boring life.....

Totaled a 1970 Camaro RS in 78, multiple m/c wrecks and two ultralight aircraft crashes in the early 80's, jealous husband in mid 80's (lesson learned), relatively unscathed in the 90's, after I rolled myself and a 1980 CB650 into a ball in 2002 (wearing shorts and flip-flops) I spent 7 days on the Vanderbilt Hospital weight loss plan. I guess I've got a couple left.

True, so very true.

I won't list every dumb thing I ever did that almost cost me my life.  The list is long enough with the things I did that can be listed as part of the job,  Eight engine failures while test flying helicopters tops my list of things that scared the crap outa me.  Skydiving parachute malfunctions (three) are also up there.  Can't count the number of times someone has tried to kill me on a motorcycle as I'm sure most of us can attest to, been damn lucky I guess.  Yeah, I've had the ruptured appendix also.  Got so many scars on my abdomen it looks like a road map.   Been shot at both overseas and here in CONUS by folks that didn't like me flying where I was flying.  Won't even talk about that time an irrate husband chased me shooting his shotgun.  Lips Sealed
I've led a blessed life and most of my close encounters with the reaper were self-inflicted.  Might be something to learn here.  Nah, just dumb luck I'm think'n.  Wink

Regardless, cats being the exception, we've only got one life to live, live it to it's fullest.  Just don't go stupid.   Wink

Spent 22 years in the Air Force, deployed to "hot spots" at least a dozen times.  There is no ryhme or reason why some don't make it back.  When I was in Bosnia, me an a Irish MP were walking side by side down a road behind a Bosnian farmer about six feet back.  Bosnian steps on a land mine, Irish MP loses a leg and I'm fine?  I have at least one near death experience from every deployment.  Most recently was taken out by a semi while riding last March.  Almost lost my leg the the docs pieced humpty dumpty together again.  Still riding....

Not really sure.  ??? Had a 1500 lbs bull dance on my head which required a ambulance ride. Woke up a few hours later. Got hung up in my rope a few times. These during my rodeo days.
Had a factory explosion which we went into, as medics. Got to the door and another explosion happened. Thru us back a few feet. Scarry.

I do not know if all these are legitament reasons to count, ... I'll let you be the judge.
(1). Hit and totaled my '54 Ford Victoria on a telephone pole in '"58
(2). Rolled my '64 1/2 Mustang 4 times in '66 when a drunk T-boned me going through a stop sign.
(3).Rolled my '73 Jeep Comando 3 times in a farmers field when I crossed the center line on a
reverse camber curve into oncomming traffic ( going way too fast. ) Came out the backside       window and bounced back when it landed on it's roof.
(4). Fractured my leg when taking a skijump in Snowmass, Campground run and landed in the woods
trying to show off for some women.   In '68( Bad mistake. )
(5). Almost disembowled my self as a aprentice meat cutter in 1960. ( The boss use to holler
to everyone " if you are not getting cut now and then you are not working hard enough.)
(6). Chopped toes off with lawnmower at remote Deer Camp and bled for three hours till got to
      Hospital.
(7). Totaled 'Goldwing' going too fast in rainstorm when a deer steped into road and grabbed too
much brake, and slid down road at 65mph and just missed mailbox on 4/4 post.
(Cool. Fell off roof when I stepped back to admire work and landed in pile of dirt from 2nd story.

If you didn't like the 277 - try a good connection to 120. Current kills us, not voltage. The lower the voltage, the more current is drawn! ( I think that's what they taught - check me out....). Did I read that "ole sparky", at one time was, only 70 some volts??

Three heart surgeries in the last eight years. The last one I spent 36 days in St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville Tennessee. 28 of those were spent in a coma. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. But I'm better now, and the bright side is I have lots of riding time now. Because my doctor told me it was time to retire. So after all that and 35 years with the same company, its time to go riding!

I forgot one.  On July 4 1976, in a fit of patriotism, I blew myself up with a quantity of black powder.  Shirtless, the powder blasts into your skin where it finishes burning, 1st/2d degree burns from the waist up; glasses saved my eyes, boy did the burned off full beard stink.  I'm not telling how it happened, but stupidity was involved.   My nurse on the afternoon shift at the hospital looked outstanding in her tight whites with brightly flowered panties, so I married her some months later.  She always said I got burned twice..... and she was right.

The U of Mich hospital was no smoking, so a friend smuggled some in.  I stood by the window to smoke, but it was hard to light a match with full bandages on both hands/arms, so I lit the bandages on fire (gauze burns amazingly quickly).  Put them out, but could not hide the evidence, and boy did I get in trouble with the nurses.

1.  Was leaning into crash victim's car window, and felt a tug at the back of my bunker coat. Didn't find out til about a half hour later that a car had come by and brushed me with its mirror.  That explained why the cops took off so fast, and where my name patch went off of the tail of my coat...

2. Was fighting a coke pile fire while working the FD at the steel mill, and witnessed a steam explosion from underneath the coke pile while standing about 10-15ft away. 50tons of coke takes a big boom to make it go up, and makes a big boom when it comes back down.

Maybe its a good thing that I've hung up my fire gear....

Karen was you born in Alabama ?

I couldn't even begin to tally up all the close calls. My mother and I tried to count all the broken bones and stitches one time...She said I grew up in the E.R. and said she hopes I decide to move out before my 40th B-day!  We gave up counting stitches at 90 something and she said that's too many for a 15 yr old! We decide to count the bones in reverse order (from present to child hood ) and Mom did not want to talk about it any more when the count got to 40 !
She said " cats have 9 lives. I dont know how many you were blessed with but you have used them all  PLUS ONE! "  She must have been a little upset by that point because she says I owe her at least 1 new car for all the miles she burnt up in E.R. visits and follow up appointments.
