Question for the Florida folks.....

I'm pretty certain I already know the answer to this but.......what are those little (?) black multi- legged creatures about 1.5 to 2" long and 1/2-3/4" wide that seem to mostly come out at night or in the dark.  Faster than heck and able to move in any direction - up, down, sideways etc.  Almost impossible to catch or kill.

Are they normal in homes? Harmful?  Best way to get rid of them or are they just a part of life?  Time to call the Orkin Man or is this a do-it-yourself project?  Are they harmful to pets i.e., cats and or small dogs?

Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated!
