Is the rear rim on a '97 wider or narrower in the axle plane than the later years' rear rims.  The brake disc does not match up with the rear brake caliper when installed.  I have the suspicion that I'm trying to put a chrome '97 rim on an '03.  Thanks in advance...Jim  Sad

I'm not sure if the rims are different ( i thought they were all the same on the rear).Your probably having the same issue I had going to a '98 wheel on my '99 standard.
I had to shim out the rotor with flat washers to get it to line up in the center of the caliper mounting bracket.

It's been awhile but if I remember correctly the brake mounting bracket is where the difference is between the year models.

I'm sure if this isn't right someone will jump in here and correct it.

The rotor is already too far out to line up with the caliper.  Suggestions?...Jim

What rotor are you using, your 2003 one or are you using one that came with the wheel?

As to the issue, later year rotors are different so the caliper bracket changed to accommodate (the wheel is slightly different too).   I've seen four different answers on this forum about this:

1.  Keep the same year rotor as the wheel and it will work.
2.  Keep the same year rotor as the bike and it will work. (direct opposite of answer 1)
3.  Change the rear caliper bracket.
4.  Shim

I'll find out soon enough as I bought new 2001 wheels to go on my '97 and will be putting them on this spring, but it would be nice to know what rotor you are using that doesn't work, that could clear up the contradiction I've seen between 1 and 2.

Regarding the two wheels and the question about dimensional differences.

Since you have both wheels it would be a simple thing to mark the axle and compare the mark when the axle is inserted into either wheel.

I think a few would be interested in your results regarding this.

Thru the years the rear brake caliper bracket has remained the same.

I read differently in some thread here once (probably should have just checked parts fiche), if this is true then it leans towards #1, same year rotor as wheel.

I spent yesterday afternoon looking up the order #'s of Valkyries.  I also received a couple of PMs from members.  From what I learned by looking up part #s is that all the Valkyries use the same caliper.  All standards & tourers (97, 98, & 99) have the same wheel and rotor.  All Interstates and the standards & tourers from 2000 on use another wheel and another rotor. As long as you do not mix the two in any way, the wheel and rotor combination will fit any Valkyrie.  I know that some have used flat washers to space the rotor out so that it will work.  I would suppose that would be the later model wheel & the original model rotor, because I was trying to put a later model rotor on an original wheel and it was almost 1/4 inch too far out to match up with the caliper...Jim  Smiley

If you go and look in this thread at reply #5 by RP#62 you will see the two situations side by side.

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,38548.0.html

What you can't see is the backside of the rotors, where there is a difference.

On the old style rotors the mounting surface is relieved, while on the new style rotors the mounting surface is a positive offset.  These both being in relationship to the braking surface of the rotor.

This explains why you can install an old style rotor on a new style wheel using shims to place the rotor in the proper position relative to the caliper.

And this also explains why you cannot put a new style rotor on a old style wheel since that will place the rotor too far outboard in relation to the caliper.

Thanks for the info.   cooldude  It's nice to finally have a definitive answer, especially seeing as the closest I could find for nicer new replacement rims for my '97 was to buy new 2001 factory polished and clear coated rims.    Now I can enter the switch-over this spring with everything ready and no guesswork.
