Gimmick movie. Nobody respects these guys more than I do but I'd rather see a documentary any day.

I've seen a good deal of it. It's essentially a recruitment film.

BTW, that's just my personal opinion. Top Gun was essentially recruitment propaganda and I liked that. But of course I'm a jetophile so...

But as I see it this movie's big gimmick is that it's starring "active duty Navy SEALs". I'm not sure that makes it a better movie though. Production values are high, 'splosions are great and there's some cool stuff to see. But the whole angle of using real military guys seems heavy handed to me. If I'm going to watch real military guys do their thing then I'd rather see a documentary of actual events rather than dramatizations. But then, real documentaries tend to show you the ugly side as well as the glory and heroism. My guess is that the military has had enough of that lately.

I'll probably end up renting it through Netflix eventually but I won't spend movie theater prices for what is essentially a 90 minute commercial.

Looks to be a good movie.  I'm too old to be recruited so I'm safe.  Already did my time Grin

might be gimmicky and it's not going to be polished to hollywood standards (which might be a good thing ) but I'll definitely see it cooldude real deal navy seals, and LIVE ordinance. Shocked

I heard the producers are ex stuntmen and they couldn't find any hollywood types that could do the physical stunts in the film. the answer? let's get the real guys, sounds logical to me.....

I saw it Friday night and would fight the crowds to see it again at night and pay full price.  That's how much I liked it.  In fact I will buy the extended director's cut version when it comes out.

I went to see it Friday night in a very crowded theater.  Two things struck me:

1) you could DEFINITELY tell they weren't actors Smiley  Not a criticism, just an observation.

2) at the end of the movie the entire crowd was greatly affected by power of the story.  As everyone was leaving, there was a hush over the crowd to the point that I could not hear anyone speaking. It was very unusual to be with that many people in a crowd with no one speaking.  I remember being overwhelmed with emotion by the knowledge that these men do this for MY protection.

My utmost respect goes out to our armed forces.

Took my bride to see it last night. Like others have said not to many dry eyes, gave me a deeper appreciation of those who serve, the sacrifice and training to be the best to protect what we take so for granted. many just stayed sitting in there seats at the conclusion. I will encourage my sons to see it.

You know I may rethink going to see this.  My wife had asked if I wanted to see it and I told that I really didn't and why. She said "Well you loved Band of Brothers and that's not a documentary, so why not this?" Thne I thought about how some of my favorite movies are Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, The Hurt Locker etc. I find it hard to argue with that logic.

Every legitimate review I've heard on Act of Valor has been excellent. I'm anxious to see it. Everyone I've heard from who actually saw it, loved it.

All the best,

Was reading something on the internet, said this movie was a Pentagon project.  Financed by the taxpayer but they hired some real Hollywood professionals to direct and do all the real movie stuff.  That's why it is so well done.  Yeah, it's kind of a recruiting film but also, a film to restore some pride in out forces and nation.  That doesn't bother me in the least.  Went to airborne school with two SEALS, thought I was pretty tough, they made my look like a little girl.  Real professionals extremely dedicated and loyal, traits worthy of teaching our youth and many adults.

Pretty good idea IMO.  Regardless, I'll see it someday when it comes out on DVD.  Since I got the big screen and surrond sound, I don't go to theaters any more.  Would rather sit in my own recliner and be waited on hand and foot as I request.  Yeah, like that really happens.   Roll Eyes

Great story. I agree about the comment that you easily see that the guys were not actors but WOW what a group! We should be grateful we have these guys.

36 years ago last Friday, I got hauled off the beach at Coronado on a strecher. Week 7, day 5. I was broken hearted and still am.  I had some friends that made it through and I did get to play in the Phillipines. They are the nicest, unostentacious, most intelligent, gentle men you'd ever hope to meet.
I'll go see it.  Stay SANDY.

I went to see it last Friday. Perty damn cool! The fact that "they" were not real actors just made it all the more realistic, live ammo and all. As others have said, the place was virtually silent when the movie ended. Took awhile for people to stir. The wifeunit is not fond of "war" type movies with all the bombs bursting and guns blazing, etc . . . but the story behind it made it a tear-jerk'er for her. She enjoyed it for the story line and the patriotic efforts put forth by a a few, so others don't have to. It should bring home the point that terrorism is an unconventional style of warfare, and the real deal.  I'm not a movie critic, but I thought it was damn good. sheets (USN)
