SCARY!!!
The original warning states this is spreading thru out the states rapidly......cap on - - do not pick it up.
________________
Important Warning - Very Real
Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up - leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you'll never make it!!!
If the bottle is picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little - in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some of your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well.
Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc.
Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water.
A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!!
No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc.
Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed of this.

That was on McGiver years ago...it takes a lot longer then 30 seconds to go off..more like 3 or 4 minutes, the plastic bottle will take time to expand before bursting. You can do the same thing with dry ice some water and a plastic bottle.

I think the force of the explosion is exaggerated a bit too.
My opinion only.

Today all you are allowed to do is talk to the child and that is why I got the beatings, the talking did not work so then came plan B. In my generation I got the belt, that damn stinging switch and I had to go cut my own switch, worst beating I ever got was when I brought back a 4" switch. My Mom chased me out from under my bed with a 2x4, never run under the bed when parents are remodeling. At school you got the paddle if you made an F on a test. You got the paddle if you were caught with you shirt tail out. you were warned 1 time to keep the length of your hair off your ears and collar and then came the paddle. one day I was bent over getting a drink at the fountain and BAM gym teacher got me with paddle, startled I turned around said what the Hell did I do, he said " not what you did but what you are thinking about doing, then I got a nother lick for saying Hell. We had bullies and eveything kids go thru now days but we never killed anybody. Bring the belts, switches, paddles back and USE them.

Had a local little kid get my attention with one of these a couple of years ago. The force exerted may be small but the percussion, when the bottle is tossed into my semi-enclosed front porch, is quite loud.

These have been around for years. Kids usually put them in mailboxes around here, pressure really builds up in them, bows them apart.

I make my own soda with a CO2 tank. In researching it, I've read ordinary 2 liter bottles are made to withstand 100psi for those who would forgetfully leave them in a car on a hot summer day. So any mixture of chemicals that will make one burst has a LOT of pressure behind it.

Also, knowing the boy had a future goal of being a Navy SEAL, an apology was quickly forthcoming after a short reminder that the Navy might frown upon this sort of thing until such time as they're paying him to blow things up

Musclehead, they charge people with making bombs for making them. I know a kid that got charged, I do not know the real story behind it, just heard the "Mom" version from his protective mother (the type that should have tanned the kid's a** long ago).
