Fuel filler cap leaking

The fuel filler cap on my I/S is leaking.     It has always vented some fumes and a little Vaseline every week or so has handled that, but now it is leaking fuel which is enough to run down on the tank.      The gasket is not cracked or in any way damaged.  I have read on here about people "shimming" the gasket with something from underneath the gasket, but how do you get the gasket off?  I can't seem to figure out the trick.  Help anyone?  TIA  Stan

I wish I had an answer, but I am having the same problem with my I/S. Sometimes the fumes are so bad, it's a distraction while riding. Haven't heard of the vaseline trick. What do you do with it?

I don't have any fume issues while riding, but once in the garage and parked I'll return to the garage for something and I get hit with it.  Any ideas where to check?

Most likely is not the fuel cap that giving you the gas odor. Check the clamps on the black boots on the intake runners. 

I pulled the radiator pods off my IS today in order to install the chrome valances over the plugs. I'd had the gas smell. Found the clamps loose. After tightening, smell seems gone.

On some, the gas cap gasket is just too thin and dried out and not making a good seal.  I have read of folks using it as a template and getting some similar rubber (like from an inner tube) and cutting a new one (either replacing it, or adding it on top of the old one).

I read where someone lifted off the original rubber, then put down gasket material, then put the rubber back on.  Put I haven't tried it.

Stratnick--I just rub the Vaseline on the sealing surface of the gasket
Valkahuna--all my clamps are tight.  I can see the fuel coming out on the chrome around the filler cap
Chiefy--That is what I want to do, but can't figure out how to get the original gasket off

Take the cap off of the bike. Get comfortable, it can be a job. Remove the "donut" rubber gasket. Cut a thin donut shaped gasket out of some very thin material, like 1/32, it doesn't take much. Put the "shim" you made on the cap then work the rubber back on to the cap. I did this two years ago and it is still fine. It will take a bit of effort to push the down to get it to latch, but it will seat in and be back to normal shortly.

My IS was stinking in like fashion and I tried everything with the gas cap including sealing the area in plastic to varify the problem. It did no good, what worked was draining that tube under the bike that has the plug in it. I drained it several times on my last 2500 mile trip and never smelled gas again. Try it. Joe
