The April issue of American Motorcyclist has an interesting study in it done by the NHTSA that collected data from more than 6,000 drivers nationwide.
77% of drivers will answer a call while driving. 66% will keep on driving. 45% hold the phone. 54% says it doesn't affect their driving 18% send text messages while driving. 66%will keep on driving while texting. 25% says it doesn't affect their driving. 90% feel unsafe as a passenger if the DRIVER IS TEXTING! ( my emphasis, unbelievable!) About 2/3rd's of them say they could take their eyes off the road for no more than two seconds without a problem. YOUNG DRIVERS said that they could take their eyes off the road for 5 TO 10 SECONDS OR MORE, WITHOUT A PROBLEM (again, my emphasis).
That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about riding around some of these-----------fill in the blanks. Riding season is almost here, be careful out there!

Oss, Unfortunately, very true! The Price of Progress, If I want to progress to an older (yet) age, while riding I will continue to anticipate that one hand is holding the cell phone while a digit on the other hand is somewhere in their nether region.

Hey, one that scares me: I had a girl in my class at the high school where I teach. She came back from lunch one day and mentioned she had hit a tree while coming back from eating. I asked if she was texting, and she said the main cause was that she just forgot she was driving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not afraid to call or answer my hands free system with onstar, but I do not use a phone under any other circumstances. It is fully voice activated both talking and answering. When I was working with the fire dept, we had a radio talk button on the steering wheel ring on the command cars, I had no problem with that either, kinda like the Nascar drivers use. Hoser

I text and drive. I text and ride, well not alot, but i do check them and add one word responses that requires me not to look at the phone. If kits with me she will do it for me. I rarly make calls in my truck while moving. Same for the bike. I do make calls while driving the ambulance tho, maybe once every few months. Its medical related and only takes less then a min.

90% of the f-wits who blow my STOP lights on the school bus have a phone held to their empty heads.
The other 10% are simply beyond belief.
Doesn't matter theirs sex or age. All are guilty.

I don't do the texting thing, but trust me I AM a professional driver and can talk on my blue tooth whilst driving. you'd never know that I'm on the phone unless you look up and see my BT. numerous times I've had to tell my SO that I'm in traffic and will call back (new laws ban commercial drivers from texting)

Timing is everything and these damn laws try to assume one size fits all. when I'm alone on I-90 crossing western Minnesota I can see ahead of me and behind me far enough to look down and punch a button or two at a time (whether it is on the phone, or the radio or the cruise control or the wipers) When I'm in rush hour traffic going thru the city it is not even a thought text or call.

I have Blue tooth in both vehicles, but not on the bike or Chevy Trike.
If the phone rings on one of the later ones, it will come up as a missed call.
I'll call them back when I stop for gas, potty call or a soda. Otherwise it stays on my belt.
We had a young girl actually run over in her Mustang that was texting, blew a stop light and a Big assed Ladder truck hit her about 40 MPH. They had to lift the Fire Truck off of her car before she could be extricated. About 30 of us stood around the truck and car with blankets to block the sight seer's.

I'm one of those guys that absolutely REFUSES to text! If I receive one, I won't even answer it. If someone wants to contact me, CALL ME!
As far as making or taking calls while driving, my truck has a hands free system. I would never take a call while riding on the trike. I'd pull over to the side of the rode if i had to make a call!

As of yesterday, it is illegal in PA to text while driving. But cell phones are still legal. Generally, I don't have a problem talking on the phone while driving, but dialing is definitely a distraction. And the only time I'd text while driving is when sitting still in traffic, like if I'm in a traffic jam due to an accident or construction. Otherwise, if the car is moving, I'm not texting. At most, if I receive a text, I might just hit the button to glance and see the text. But I'm not responding until later.
Obviously...to me at least...it is situational. If there is alot of hectic traffic, you need to focus your attention on driving. But if you are pretty much alone on a big open stretch of highway, it is less of a problem.

Obviously, there is the rub. I think that we, the motorcycle riders, are more aware of our vulnerability(at least we should be) and are more alert and not distracted.. It's the ones that don't have a clue that I'm afraid of and give them plenty of room to screw up on their own, and i don't have the time to pick and choose which is which so all are idiots to be. Coming from the age of landline 'pay' phones, and retired, I don't use my cell except in certain cases. Even then, I don't use it while driving even tho I have blue tooth in the car. No call is important enough to distract me from spending full time to driving. As far as riding and cell phone use, he##! I can't even ride while chewing gum. Yeah, and don't try chewing gum in a well padded full face either! Don't ask me how I know.
