Yesterday I did an experiment. I turned the pilot screws in, and only 3/4 turn out. And switched to 2nd richest setting on the Dial-A-Jet. The smallest hole on the Dial-A-Jet is the richest setting (when positioned like "A") and the largest hole is the leanest setting (when positioned like "B") http://www.valkyrienorway.com/Dial-A-Jet%20NEW.htmlI tuned it so the CO is exactly the same, only getting more fuel from the DAJ and less through the carbs. That made an huge difference... it acts like an sports bike It`s two years since I installed the DAJ, and I have been satisfied with its performance. Yesterday`s experiment really surprised me!

Doggonit Dag! I just got mine working, and you go and write things like this! Now I'll have to go and take it apart again! Cool report though. I'll be curious how this affects your ride's MPG.

I have a -97, be aware of that the -97 have other carbs than the other models and require other settings.
'97 Except California type : 1 3/4 turns out California type: 2 turns out
After '97 Except California type: 2 1/4 turns out California type: 2 3/8 turns out

Level of Carbon Monoxide. As close to 3% as possible for best performance.

Dag, Great write up. I just bought a DAJ for another bike I own. When I spoke with them they recommend going 2-3 main jet sizes down. The leaner it runs the better the DAJ works. They claim 1 HP per 100cc. I can't wait to get mine. After seeing your write up I may do my Valkyrie... It was interesting these work on sound waves. They were created by the guy who owned Denco racing in the 70"s. http://www.thunderproducts.com/dial_a_jet_techpaper.htm

It would be great if someone doing this dial a jet mod would do a dyno run on their bike, then do the mod, then take it back to the same dyno and tech, and do a run again to compare. Seat of the pants is tough! Thanks. MP

I did, two years ago. I HAD MY VALKYRIE DYNO TESTED WITHOUT AND WITH THE DIAL-A-JET. THE INCREASE WAS 7.7 HP. From 101.2 HP to 108.9 HP It was running too rich on high RPM, so I changed to #98 main jets. I have not had a new dyno run since changing the jets.

With all the carb adjustments / experiments I have done during the last three years I really dont remember. I do check the spark plugs, but the CO tester tells me much more. The plugs can indicate things, but the CO tester can tell me exact.

Yes, I have changed the needles. I used the jet-kit that followed the Viking Exhaust. It`s on the second notch.

Yes, I have changed the needles. I used the jet-kit that followed the Viking Exhaust. It`s on the second notch. The viking exhaust needles are dyna-jet needles and are richer than the FP ones. I have both sets.

I have a dyna-jet kit in my garage. The needles in that kit is not the same as I got from Viking. The Viking needles are Titanium.

I should clarified, I do not know about the difference in material but I can see that the taper is the same btwn the dyna's and the vikings. I recently picked up a set of V pipes and the needles. I will check my two sets for difference in material. Tapers could be different I guess if matters if there were different revisions. I know my sets have the same exact tapers or the viking needles sent to me are not the org viking needles.
