Golf grip tape - Clean the bars, wrap the tape around them in a spiral, remove the paper, coat the tape with lighter fluid or mineral spirits, and slide the grip on. Let sit 'til the solvent evaporates.

Spray the bars and inside the grips with Hair Spray and slip them on. Let dry.

Is this (these jokes?) forget tape, forget hairspray.....I think people resort to weird and wild "recipies" because they dont do it right in the first place so they have a bad experience with grip glue. I did the same thing until I learned.
Chrome is slippery glue doesnt always like to stick. HINT: sandpaper makes chrome WAY less slippery
New gripes that have a rubber lining are not usually ready to install out of the box. That rubber was molded and to get it out of the mold they have to put oil (mold release) in the mold so they can get it out. HINT #2: A rough cloth and rubbing alcohol will remove the oily substance that will interfere with the glue.
Last mistake. If you put the glue on the handlebar and then try to slide the grip on you will push most of the glue up agaist the control box. LOL, I see this all the time in Daytona......(because I see a lot of bikes) the grip glued to the control box. HINT #3: put the glue in the grip at the opening 360° around the inside and twist it back and forth a tad as you push it on....dont use tons of glue (more is not better) once its on, make sure its set how you want it QUICKLY and then dont touch it. The glue sets up fast and you screw with it after the setting has started, well its never going to hold then.
DONT RIDE FOR 24hrs after install

there really is no best way...lots of differing opinions. I think Chris gave you the "best" advice.

Had an emergency on the road once, thec throttle grip came loose. Stopped by a Wally World and bought a small can of hair spray. After trying it, I thought to myself - "This is BS". did not work at all. Yes, I cleaned the throttle tube with alcohol and even roughed it up. I ended up going back into Wally World and buying a little bottle of Gorilla Glue. Now that stuff worked. Sold the bike 2 years later and the GG was still holding tight.

I've also tried the hair spray method and got caught in a frog choker and the grip came loose. Believe me, the golf grip tape works, and I imagine the gorilla glue will as well. Without scratching up the chrome.
