How closde can the Saddlebags be?

As some of you may remember, a couple of weeks ago the wife got a new V-Star 650 (and as one suggested, he hoped she'd spend lots of money on accessories, which she did  ) now we got a great deal on some saddlebags, (leather look a like) and when I mounted them, to get them to look right I had to bring the bags lower than I cared, so the right bag is about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the pipe and now I fear it may be too close. Anyone know if that will be OK? Or will it get burned?
We ride all the time since she has the new bike, me on the Valk (now its related  ) and she on her Star, its a whole differnt experience now that she has the Star, she is pushing to ride, unlike with the Suzuki she was avoiding the ride.

i think you should be fine,,my bags are plastic and sit about an inch above the exhaust pipe...the valks have a heat shield on them

start the bike and let it idle for a while and put your hand inside the bag and see how hot it gets, the if thats ok ride it for a block or two at a time and feel it again and do this untill you are satisfied that it wont get to hot,,,

It sounds a little too close to me.  If they were hard bags, I'd be less worried.  But leather bags tend to move around a little.  Plus, if they sag at all when full of stuff, they might hit or even rest against the pipes.

If the bag sags any, ya'll is going to have a hole.

See if you can find something to protect the bag from burning.

I used to use asbestos on mine but that crap is banned from using.

I think to make sense of it we'll need to know specifically what kind of bags.  What does "leather look a like" mean?

Willow all the bags are listed as is "Made of PVC Material" not sure what that means, PVC is plastic to me. But with the materials now of days I just do not know, I had a set on the Valk that were non leather and they had about a 3/4 inch from the pipe and had no issues, but I do not know what they were made of.
 I am not sure that the 1/2 to 3/4 inch will be enough, I do not have too much concern while riding compared to when stopped after a ride.

Thanks Willow, I know its close that's why the question, but if I raise them they look cramped, so I geuss with the great forecast, we will test it this weekend. I will let you know.
