I installed a Pingel manual shutoff in my standard.  It seems the reserve does not work right.  The shutoff works because the engine will die in off position. The other day I run out of gas in the run position, lever all the way back, so I move to the middle, *reserve  position* and nothing, still out of gas. I got lucky to coast into a station.  The fill was 4.2 gal. I thought the Standard tank was 5 gal cap? Anybody have the same setup and have used reserve?

What you did sounds right. Did you wait long enough for the reserve gas to flow into the carbs? I have a Pingel and have run out, switched to reserve, waited a while as the flow is not the greatest at a low gas level, and then restarted without a problem. Did you add an additional fuel filter or Dan-Marc electric solenoid while you had things apart? Sometimes, too many doo-dads in sequence can stop the relatively weak gravity-flow of the remaining fuel. Been there - done that.

Fuel capacity is 5.3 gallons on a standard/Tourer and 6.9 gallons on an I/S.

BonS is right re. fuel flow and pressure from a reduced amount of gas in the tank. Also, keep in mind the pickup tube on the Pingel is shorter than the OEM petcock. To get back to the level of reserve the OEM unit has, you need to add some length to it. I don't recall who suggested it, but this is what I did some years back. I first went to a local hobby shop and picked up some tubing used for model car/airplane fuel lines...get it just large enough to slip over the Pingel pickup. Steel wool or sandpaper the inside of the new tube and outside of the pickup tube. Measure how much extra you need by laying the OEM unit next to the Pingel. Then just sweat it on like you would a water line. Now you're back to the OEM level of reserve. This is what the final product looks like, had mine in place for 5-6 yrs. now. You won't be able to use the Pingel filter on the pickup tube, but most riders seem to go with an external one as did I. Just be sure when dressing out the fuel lines, everything runs downhill....not just level, but downhill with no low spots. There's more than a few riders out there that have made that mistake and tossed out a perfectly good quick disconnect, thinking that was the problem. I've seen more than a few, and a number of them weren't "downhill" all the way.

I put the bike level on my lift and unpluged the fuel line. To test I ran a line from the Pingel to a gas can on the ground. Off works, reserve works, ran lever back on normal run until gas stopped, but it never stops competely, it continues with a fast drip. I wonder if I was riding slow this condition keeps the motor running until it is out of gas?

If after a bit of time passes, it still keeps dripping: You have a bad petcock, which will fail you at the worst possible time.

I drained the tank down to reserve,  the bike will still run at idle or slow speed, but bog out at high speed until I switch to reserve.  I think any pingel is not leak tight on the reserve bottom holes in the run position enough to keep the engine running slow.

You said your fill was a tad over 4 gal.....It didnt run you out of gas.  Since you tested it and reserve works, you probably just diidnt have the lever right.  As far as the off not going all the way off....make sure you have the Pingle set right so teh lever doesnt bump into something before it goes all the way off.
