My personal philosophy on getting a tattoo: As  explained to the 15 or 16 year olds looking at your tattoos, you say "you don't want to put something on you that you have a hard time explaining to some little Sh!? who thinks you are a f#@&ing comic book.

There are some Old Testament writings about many things Leviticus 19:28  this was because of local practices of idolatry.  Many old "laws" applied to specific people in specific times.  Like some priests couldnt eat or drink anyhing from grapes at all.  That does not mean a modern day Christ follower is not to get a tattoo.  The new testament is all about freedom in a relationship with the Lord.  When it comes to these personal choice things..... Whatever a man by faith and prayer allowes between himself and God is Faith.  Whatever a man deems wrong for himself between himself and God is to him Sin Romans 14:23.  Christ came to free us from the curse and bondage of the old law.  If you arent a Christian and dont believe the Bible is Gods word, then you have no dog in this fight....go get a tattoo or dont, no one will mind.  If you are a Christian and you want to get a tattoo, the big question is why and how will it reflect on your witness.  If you can be at peace with it between you and your Lord, then let no man tell you its wrong.

This tattoo opened more doors to talk to bikers about Christ.  Theres no way this was wrong, and not just because its a cross.  Because if was a matter of faith

I have one tattoo and I would like to have it removed because it is crappy work.  I appreciate the art in it and have seen some really spectacular stuff.  I have two nephews who are covered.  If I had it to do over I would not have any but not for the reason you might think.  When I was young only criminals had tattoos.  When others starting getting them it was kind of cool because it marked you as different and not a follower.  Now, with tattoos so prevalent, I would opt to buck the trend and be different and not a follower by remaining tattoo free.  All trends start as rebellious or "different" but when they become too widespread become the norm.  I remeber a comic strip I saw years ago where a young kid asks his parents if he can get a tatoo.  His parents ask why he wants one.  He replies " I want to be different.  Like everybody else"!

I heard that a lot of tatoos over a large part of the body can cause problems- that the tatoo destroys the sweat gland in the skin, and can cause the liver to work harder.  No idea if that is true or to what degree, if it is true.

If you look hard enough you can find justification for about anything, or admonishment to not do anything, you want to find in the Christian Bible, but Leviticus 19:28 is I believe what is being referred to here:

Quote
Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.

(Same line in different versions of the bible here - http://bible.cc/leviticus/19-28.htm )

I think it says "pierce not thy body nor tattoo any marks upon it".
But that's under the Law, anyway. Doesn't apply to me!!!!

The Bible warns us against tattoos in Leviticus 19:28 (Amplified) which says, "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord."

the new testament Jesus came to fullfill the laws not do away with them.

Fudgie, suggest u go to the site and study everything is states, but basically its talking against them if the tatoos are/where received as a witchcraft rite done to mourn or remember their dead.
there are other verses that refer that we should not be additive to anything, but God/Jesus, how many in this thread have already stated that it is additive?

In the New Testament, we are told to glorify God in our bodies.  This would include not marring our bodies with tattoos, as the principles in the Bible clearly tell us it is wrong to defile our bodies.

Just because a person has had a tattoo, it will not prevent God from using people to witness nor keep them from being a minister of God.  God looks on the heart and can use different things to testify of Christ's love, even tattoos.  However, well- meaning people can be deceived in their methods of evangelism.

Jewish people who by the way do believe in G-D, cannot be buried in a consecrated Jewish cemeteries  with "graven images" on their body. This was explained to me as my Mother led a bayonet charge against me with a corn broom stick after I said something very inappropriate when I came home with my first tattoo.

I listened to a comedian on the XM one time talking about tatoos on women.  He said that the women make a big mistake putting on a tatoo of a dolphin on her breast when she was 20.  At 40 and 50 it looks like a balooga whale.  Or at 20 get the small yellow Tweety or the breast.  Then when you get in your 60 or so the grandkids always want you show them Big Bird.  It's a matter of choice.  I, myself do not have any.   I thought about a dragon(because of my Dragon), or other ones and it seems that I always talk myself out of it.  I was told many years ago that humans in general after 7 years seem to have a change of heart about a lot of things and regret what they have done or have had done to themselves.  If I had a choice of paying money out for either a tatoo or stuff for my Valk, well the Valk wins, hands down.  But people have different tastes, so like I said earlier, its a matter of choice.  Whatever your decision, live with it and enjoy it.

Nope, and no piercings either.

I am rather proud of my multiple scars though.  My favorite is the one-inch inside my right eye orbit from smacking it on the corner of a marble coffee table while crawling around in the dark after my HS girlfriend with the large headlights in an angora sweater.  She was something else, and the scar was worth it  Smiley

I have all those choices, without accepting "The New Covenant".  I should say I am married to a Catholic Lady and have nothing but love and respect for her faith.
To tell you the truth, being a Jewish man saves me the never ending need to "proselytize" to spread the faith. We just don't do it.

Without a relationship in Christ (Faith)....the new covenant, Religion is just so much pomp and ceremony.  Many are great for living but none are worth a dime for dying without Christ.  Jesus Christ is the only source of true forgiveness and the only path to God.  No religion can take the place of a renued life through faith in Christ.  Christianity is not a religion.  There are Christians in most all religions and there are Religious people in all religions that are not Christians.  You can be a Christian and be religious but if I had to choose Id take Christianity over religiosity in a heart beat.

I know, how arrogant of me to think that what I believe is the only right way.  I can take the criticism, its the truth, so I can say it fearlessly........I would rather you say, someday......Wow, it is true and I remember that Valkyrie guy said it a long time ago, than Wow it is true, why didnt anyone tell me

I also respect your belief and your freedom to disagree with me.  What I say here is not meant as a cut to those that see it differently, its just what I feel one should say when they believe and have found the truth.....its too valuable to not be willing to share........take it or leave it, thats what God says in his word, its your choice

tatoo discussion turned to religion !!! hey if you arent BORN Jewish, can you become one or is it an exclusive member right ? when I read the old testament I was really surprised to learn that the Hebrews , when travelling out of Egypt, went into cities they defeated and " killed every man woman , child and beast " !!!! they didnt f@#$% around !! If you dont accept Christ as your savior you are burnin !!!! All non Muslims are Infidels and should be killed to assure your passage to heaven ..... Even though Mooohammmed was a PEDOPHILE with a 9 yr old wife ! Religion is a discussion all to itself and is like the "my brand is better than your brand" and "synthetic is better than regular oil" and on and on . "I" personally am Agnostic because I'm too big of a coward to be an Atheist or to actually buckle down and be a good little sheep in the flock . I just hope one of you is right so you can tell the others "I tole ya so !"  I have studied Religion out of "curiositys sake" and it is fascinating stuff , but has little to do with if you have a tatoo or not .
Judaism certainly accepts converts! However, Judaism does not have missionaries or proselytize Outside  the faith.

I could see where someone of Faith would say that Agnostic and Atheist is the same from their point of view , but they are actually very different .It would be  like me looping Baptist , Catholics , Lutherans ,Jews , Pentecostals , Mormons ,Muslims ,Evangelicals , Jesuites, Adventists ....Etc .into 1 big religious group just because their religion is all based on the Old Testament  "God " . But  I know they are all very different and I also know that they are ALL  right  and that their path is the only path and I am gonna BURN IN ETERNAL DAMNATION.  But I also couldnt give a good Frog  F@%K. Your religion and your beliefs are beyond reproach and I know it .I know my place ! You missed my point big time!! Either someone believes God exists or they believe God
doesn't exist. How can there be middle ground? Correct me if I misunderstand "agnostic",
but aren't they supposed to be in between "God exists" and "God doesn't"? Save your childish
attempts at sarcasm for those at your own level. They're useless here.

You obviously have very little understanding of Hell. But if Hell exists
wouldn't that also prove God exists?  uglystupid2

We've strayed WAY off the original topic, but Simple:

Christian - 100% Positive God exists, and I know all about him.
Atheist - 100% Positive no god exists.
Agnostic - I don't know. Or, some say it is unknowable. Doesn't say god doesn't exist, the Agnostic says they just don't know.

I have 7 rats that I should have covered up years ago, IF, I cared what someone else thought of me. Mine tell a story over 10 years I care not to remember, but won't forget. Those ten years made me who I am. So, I leave them for everyone else to guess, maybe judge... But I don't care either way.
As far as what the bible says? It says whatever you want it to say because the original writings were written in parables.. Written so whoever read it could interpret it to fit their lives. Simple as that. I have seen no miracles, felt no burning, blazing fire from inside, felt no comfort in any church I have been in. But my beliefs are mine, not yours and I leave it at that. The rest of it is just soapboxing and preaching that I guess, would be better off in some other thread where if I wanted to read about His holiness, I could go there to read it.

In far too many cases this is true because far too many
churches are caught up in religion.
