The damn pigeons think my neighborhood is a breeding ground. I took out my bb gun to sight it in. at first it was way off about 4" to the left and 1" low. after a few shots at 14 yards I think i kinda got it dialed in. the first 3 shots were with 5 pumps and the last(bottom right) had 6 pumps. I noticed the more I pump it, the less accurate it is. HMMMMMMM  Havent shot at any of those flying rats yet. I think the noise from the bb gun scared them off. Gotta wait till tonight. Evil

"Hey! You can't beat up my friends you rats-with-wings!" - Sandy Squirrel

That's actually common with bb's that if you over pump them they're less accurate. If the gun is capable of shooting pellets then try using those instead. Higher velocity should actually improve accuracy.

Personally, I like the break-action pellet rifles. One pump, same velocity every time. Some of them approach .22LR velocities.

I have a break-action scoped target .177 pellet rifle that purports to deliver 1100fps velocity.  I have never chronographed it as I don't have one but I'm guessing it at least approaches that speed.  I have seen similar air rifles claim up to 1500fps online.  FYI those are .22 velocities - even faster than some, though not .22 hyper-velocity.  The one thing I don't like is the very heavy trigger.  I'm guessing, pay more money, get a better trigger - though I paid around $150 for this one.  It'll take out a squirrel with a headshot at 50 yards.

Well last time I looked I think they maxed out at 1050-is fps. in the best of conditions. But I have been out of that game for a while. I'm sure progress has been made.

I tell ya, I had a pretty decent air rifle that went for around 200 bucks back in the early 80's but I knew some guys who had big money Beeman rifles that were in the 5 to 6 hundred dollar range. Having shot some of them I can tell you that you definitely get what you pay for in the trigger department.

That's neat. Airguns are underrated. I might have to go buy one now.

Yeah I think the NRA website has a video on that. Really cool. I'll try to find it.

that ain't yer daddies red ryder!  I still remember back in the old days you could have a bb gun fight and the worst that would happen is IT MIGHT break the skin.

(irresponsible I know but I survived) Evil  then at the tender age of 13 I got a crossman CO2 pellet gun that thing would tear the guts out of a beer can  Shocked

A small drop of oil down the barrel of the break action pellet gun will give it more ooooph.  Mine sounds like a 22 then.

Until about a year ago I had no knowledge of it either. I think it's really interesting that it uses a small tank like a paintball gun.

Call me evil, but my cheap daisy pump action pellet/bb gun with cheap scope costing guessing 50 bucks back in the 80's when I was a kid had fun wounding blackbirds and let them squak really loud.  Other crows would swoop down and create a commotion bomb diving me.  I use to kill them 5 to 6 at a time until they finally left.  Never shot any other birds or squirrels, just those pesky blackbirds all over the place - had fun.

My brother use to go out hunting with an idiot and the idiot loaded his 12 gauge with 7/8 shot and blasted my brother on purpose from about 40 yards out in the back.  Never penetrated the skin and luckily was never facing the idiot, so only stung his back and neck pretty good.  Idiots for friends is not a good thing to have.

Ive had a Beeman R1 in .17 cal., supposedly a better pellet rifle. It was extremely touchy as to stock pressure.  In good days it might do 1 inch at 25 yards. I also had a Sheridan .20 cal. It would equal the Beeman most of the time in accuracy but was also particular about no. of pumps.

I now have a NRA Special Edition .17  cal  barrel cocking Rifle..  Not bad on accuracy with the 4 power scope and supposedly 1,000fps. Probably better than the Beeman AND the Sheridan.  In addition, I have a RWS .17 cal target pistol, extremely accurate.  Chronographed at 450 FPS consistently.  A very expensive pistol but you get what you pay for.

I can't help but comment on the drop of oil down the barrel trick. VERY DANGEROUS!!!  The reason for the high velocity is because the oil is dieseled at the high pressure and temp generated by the single pump barrel.  You could blow up the rifle in your face!!  Doing this essentially makes it a firearm in the truest sense with high pressures to boot.

Most instructions for these rifles warn never to overlube the barrel or chamber.

Fastest air rifle is made by gamo, they claim 1600 fps (pba). But I'm guessing muzzle velocity is slower. Still, 1200 to 1400 fps is fast for an air rifle.

I have a RWS 48 in .22 caliber.  I used it on flying rats in Dallas and they didn't have a chance.  My cousin has one like it and accidentally killed a small dog with it.  I have a RWS scope on mine and it is incredibly accurate.

I have a couple air rifles, one a spendy RWS/Diana.  They are all supersonic and make a lot of noise (in a county where bows, bbs, pellets, slingshots, blow guns, and thrown rocks are illegal).

My 10-22 with Super Colibri subsonic .22 is quieter than a supersonic airgun and more deadly and accurate with a 4X scope.  Have to single load ammo, which will not cycle a semiauto action.  That's OK, cause I only need one.  A bolt .22 would be better.  Ammo says only for handguns, and may not clear a rifle bbl, but thousands thru an 18" rifle bbl with no problem (other than dirty, requiring mild cleaning after 15 shots or so). No powder, only primer and 20 gr slug.  No ear protection necessary.

In Illinois,  above a certain velocity, you actually need a FOID card to buy an air rifle. I think the cutoff might be above 750 fps. I couldn't believe it.

I still have an air pellet gun my Grandmother gave me for my 16th birthday.

Damn, that makes that thing 63+ years old.

5 pumps and it will put a pellet all the way through a rabbit at 20 yards.

When we 1st moved into this house, fairly new development on a farm, we were overrun with ground hogs/squirrels.   The kids and I would set on the back porch and plunk them at play.    We had a ruling, not an authorized kill if it wasn't an eye shot.  My son got pretty dang good at that.     Last time we kept count he had 18 kills to my 12.

The little pistol still gets a shot or 2 off a year now, mostly at sparrows.  If I really want to be quiet, I drag out the crossbow.     Most powerful little setup, and deadly accurate.

Somewhere during my searching on pellet guns(can't remember where), I read that, past the speed of sound, strange things start happening to pellets and you lose accuracy....

Well certain effects of aerodynamics reverse once the sound barrier is broken. But pellets suffer from the effects of supersonic flight no differently than bullets do.
