They should be regulated  to ONLY use for criminal intent not to invade people's privacy.  Hoser, if you ever see a small flying airplane in your driftless flat area of Kansas while in your backyard sipping a beer taking a whiz on  your property, be sure to give that tape recorder plane the finger.  Wink

There's really not much "new" about this at least in practice. There are already plenty of manned government aircraft flying our friendly skies with thermal, FLIR etc. that can and DO spend time watching American citizens doing various things. Don't ask me how I know this...

But the only real difference now is that they're pilotless. I personally think that unless the people at the controls of these (some of them rather large) aircraft are rated pilots then they have no business flying them within our borders.

i can easily see the state patrol using them for speeds.  cheap, easy to deploy, nearly disposeable.  i just can't wait till some private pilot crashes because he hit one while flying.

My knee-jerk reaction to this is get the shotgun out.  If I see one spying over my place - yeah likely - I'll make the first shot count.  I hope it's low enough to be hit by a 12 gauge.  I don't have any confidence I could hit one with a rifle, and then there's risk to others.  Maybe I should take up the rocketry hobby again, and this time see if I can put together a guidance system...  Yeah right.

A lot of States have been using aircraft for that for years. Ever seen while lines painted perpendicular to the direction of travel? Ever wonder what they're for?

yes, but those are piloted aircraft, not drones.  my point is that i could see drones being used instead of pilots because it's easier/cheaper.

Gotcha. That kind of goes to my whole "they need to be rated pilots" thing. I hope they aren't gonna let just any choad fly these things over populated areas (but I have a feeling they will).

in the last 6 months or so i have been flying RC helicoptors.  The prices have really come down with new battery technology.  Also i have purchased a number of them from China ( Evil oh no not USA) at a price that is DRASTICALLY cheaper than here.  It is a blast, but quite difficult to learn to control.

there are a few that have a place to attach a GoPro camera.  Only problem is i still crash a bit and don't want to lose my camera.  and even more important is I don't want to see pics of my neighbors.   Grin Grin

I believe they used a predator in the operation discussed in the article.  You know, the one that they use in Afganistan.  The ones that deliver SMART BOMBS AND MISSLES that cannot be detected.  Don't know that I want those flying over the USA.   Hoser JMO

"Sgt. Bill Macki, who runs the SWAT team in nearby Grand Forks, called in the reinforcements: a Department of Homeland Security Predator drone - a massive aircraft that until now most people associate with Hellfire missiles and strikes against terrorists."
