I am creating a new post becsude I dont want to kack anybody's threads but it does seem to be a popular topic.....

When I bought my bike it had an in line fuel filter added and I goth the below filter from the owner.....

I have three questions
1. Why does it look like that?
2. Where can I get a new one so I can remove the inline one? (it needs to go...)
3. is there an easy way to drain the tank so I can install the new oem filter once I get it?

1. They do get deformed in the tank, but it looks like the bottom of that one melted. Or someone pulled it out with a needle nose plier, they can be a pain to get out.
2. http://www.hdlparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=148103&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1998&fveh=3466 Item #4 in the fiche.
3. No need to drain the tank, just make sure it's not full. Shut the petcock off and remove the plastic chrome selector (there is a philips head screw in the center a couple of inches back). Disconnect fuel and vacuum lines and remove tank. Set it up on its nose and unscrew the petcock. Slide the new screen and oring in!

1.  Cause it is old and needs replacing.
2.  16952-MBY-003 SCREEN SET 0 $11.45  ronayers.com
3.  If you have the screen out, isn't the tank empty?  If you put it back together without it, junk will get in the carbs and cause damage.
But, I would open the Petcock with the tank sitting on a 5 gallon bucket and open the filler cap to let it run into the bucket.

I have a couple extra screen sets in inventory so I don't have to wait on ronayers or Hondaline.

Good luck.

Unless there's a tear in the screen somewhere or it's clogged with gunk, the only thing I see wrong in the picture is that the screen was damaged by the tools used to remove it.

Turn the petcock to off.  Loosen the screw in the center of the petcock selector and pull it off the petcock a small amount.  Take the 8mm screw out that holds the plastic petcock selector on and move the assembly out of the way.  Loosen the clamp and pull the fuel hose off the petcock.  Install a piece of fuel hose on the petcock long enough to drain the tank into a suitable container.  Take the vacuum line off on the left rear cylinder, #6 behind the intake.  Pull a vacuum on that line with the fuel selector temporarily installed and turned to reserve, this will drain the tank almost dry.  There will still be a few drops in the tank.

Since the tank and petcock have to come off, may as well drain the tank get get any grit out.  Run the tank low.  Remove it, and set it up on its nose.  Get a container handy.  Remove the petcock, and pick up the tank tilting it to drain into the container.  As it gets pretty low, swish it around to stir up any crud and empty the rest.
