I am planing to give painting my GL1000 tins a try. I want to paint it Calypso Coral with a black stripe like the boss mustangs had. The question I have is base coat/clear coat urethane or a single stage urethane? I was concerned about the black stripe. If I base coat the orange and black then clear the black will be too glossy, right? I've shot motors with the urethane before, it turned out fine. Never have done body parts.

I don't really know what I'm talking about, but my painter put a Black stripe on my old trailer and he clear coated it. If I understood him right, it is a 1/2 flat 1/2 gloss and it came out beautiful.
I'd ask him but he passed away a couple of years ago. RIP Rocky.
I'm just guessing, but I'd say a good paint (auto) store could fill ya in on the results.

If you want it to look like the factory Mustangs did, they were a flat black finish on the hoods. You won't get that look if you clear over the flat black texture. It will be super gloss finish. You can buy a flatening agent to add to the clear, but then the orange will turn out matt finish. I think I would do both the orange and the matt black in single stage. Maybe a pin stripe to cover the paint edge where they meet.

The Boss Mustangs were a "deglossed' black. It is a smooth black with no shine or texture.

I worked at Ford till 1975, the black I remember on the hoods was a flat finish. If you got wax on the black it was almost impossible to get it off. Maveric Grabber and the Torino GT had the same finish. Is this what you are talking about?

Yep, I had a Boss Mustang. It had a black stripe. it didn't have texture, it was smooth but no gloss.

You can get flat clear coat and just clear it in 2 steps the same way you paint the 2-tone color. They did it on one of those shows on Spike Channel this weekend..."musclecar", I think. It was a Mustang they were painting.
Depending on how much you want to put into it and just how high of a quality of finish you are after, I'd probably just paint with a single stage paint. That's what I did with my saddle bags and they came out good. If you really want it to come out super-nice, then go with base-clear.
The other option would be to use a base-clear system and just not clear over the black stripe. It will be matte finish. When I painted my Bronco, I did that on the inside of the cap and it looked good.

Why not do the coral clear/basecoat, then do the flat stripe? thats the way Ford did it.
