LIke all these boxers, this one usually smokes a bit when you first start it. What bothers me is it will continue to smoke slightly for some time after. I can run the rpm up to 3500-4000 for a few moments and let off and it will puff a bit then settle down to a slight whiff. Still noticeable, especially if I goose it a bit. Then, after letting it sit and idle for maybe five minutes or more, at least until good and warm, it stops all together. The engine sat for some time prior to being used again, came from a totaled I/S and has close to 40k on it. The bike runs like a banshee, this just bothers me. It has had Mobil 1 from day one, and I changed it myself(Mobil 1 also) before starting it again after sitting for quite some time. I'm of the opinion that this would probably disappear if the bike was taken out and run daily for a few hundred miles, then change the oil again. Almost acts like the valve seals may be hardened, or at least seeping a bit. It doesn't appear to be restricted to one side, pretty even discharge judging by the exhaust. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Mine does the same thing just out of the right side exhaust. Once it is warmed up it stops. Mine has done it since i have owned it. It also bothers me, so your not alone.

I think you could be spot on about the valve guide seals. You might try some stop leak type of oil additive, it might soften them up a bit. Or bite the bullet and swap out the seals for fresh ones.

I was wanting to sell the bike without transferring the title to me first, which would involve paying sales tax and a new tag for the interim. Total would be about $286 which I don't really have right now following some pricey travels not planned for. In the past I've changed seals with the heads still mounted, but don't have the valve spring tool any longer. Might be able to rent it I guess. I still feel an extended period of use would most likely do the trick.
Headed out of town for the remainder of the week so will address the problem with a clearer head in a few days.

john, just a few questions;
do you ever have to add oil? if yes, then you're probably got some burning out, and that's the smoke.
is it only when the engine is cold? if you're using the choke to start it, it's normal to have white smoke until the engine warms up and you turn the choke off. if you still have smoke after the engine is warmed up, and if you look at the exhaust and the smoke is coming out of only one pipe (unless you've modified your exhaust) that's probably the one thats giving you problems.
good luck, if you don't have to add oil, i wouldn't worry about it.

No choke used in Florida. Does it on both sides and once warmed up good seems to quit. Starts quick, almost fires before I can take my thumb off the button. Guess I'll see if I can scrape up the $$ and register it, then ride it for a few weeks...or however long it takes to sell it. Like to keep it but can't afford a 2nd Valk and don't really need more than one....so I'm told by that lady that hangs around here all the time.

John, if it is leaking seals, this is the solution I have used on several vehicle to soften them up again.
Change the oil, forget about the filter this time, add 1/2 qt of ATF, ride it 500 miles and then change everything out and go to normal oil change ingredients.

All of mine smoke right after start up, for sometime, while sitting/running. Never notice it after a ride down the road. Just figured it was part of the start/warm up process.
Is your smoke white or blue? White is mosture, blue is oil.
I've never had to add oil, between changes, to the bike I've owed since new and riden for 110K. She smokes at start up, but not any more than the other two. And they all stop after a good throttle turn down the road.

I let a friend ride my bike to California from Maryland and now mine smokes from the right side too I guess I’ll drain the oil put in some fresh and start checking, it’s only got 80,000 on the odometer so can’t be too much
