She is on the down side I just want her to die with out pain from arthur for the time she has left. Is there anything I give her to take away the pain? It kills me to see her walk. Try gloucosmine/codroidine (sp) can get it at any pet store. Worked great on my dog with really bad hip joints. Just a big white chaulk like table, one in each bowl of food. Good luck, puting them down is the toughest thing in the world to have to do.

A sensible combination of supplements( glucosamine-Chondrotin..you can get it at any health food store) and an anti-inflammatory, Metacam being one of the better ones. I would also add to this weight loss, gentle regular exercise

Make sure you do a Google search to check how much compared to the dogs weight.

My 4 year old black lab has severe hip displasia and we give him dausquin. It really seems to make a difference.

My 13yo Bonnie went from a miserable limper to a deer chaser with this stuff... I don't run her on purpose anymore, but she did take off after a couple of deer the other day, she's real happy these days... What is Adequan® Canine?Adequan Canine is an injectable (syringes & needles sold separately) medication that helps protect the cartilage in your dog's joints and aids in the treatment of arthritis.Contains polysulfated glycosaminoglycans, used by the body to make cartilageMy wife does the injections, if I was alone, I'd probably drag Bonnie to the vet to get the shot every couple of weeks... Rimadyl is an NSAID (like asprin), but is for dogs... personally I wouldn't give asprin to a dog, but if you know what you are doing it could be safe. Bonnie mostly just gets the shots, they do the trick. If she seems like she has pain, we'll give her half of a 100mg chewable Rimadyl... there can be side effects of too much NSAID, including Rimadyl. Good luck! -Mike

My dog was suffering with arthritis also. I started giving her 1 fish oil capsule per day in the mornings. Now she's acting like she did 5 years ago, jumping up on the bed and whatnot. It worked for me, but your mileage may vary.

My Border has bad hips but still very active. Dad got him some hip pain dog snacks from the farm store and made a huge differance. We use to give him some ASA once a day.

I have been getting the glucosimine/ Chandroitrin from Wally world and it works very well on both of my labs. If swimming your dog is an option it's much easier on the joints as the 12 year old lab doesn't stiffen up as much when she's in the pond. Couldn't imagine being without these goofballs.

Big plus 1 on the glucosamine/chondroitin. It helped my Collie/Husky mix a LOT. I estimate that it gave him a another two years of relative comfort. Actually I've been taking it for two years myself and it's been very good for my knees in particular. You can also (as Valkified said) buy it for a lot less money at WalMart than at pet stores.
And yeah, be really careful with aspirin. It works on dogs but long term use erodes the stomach lining and can cause ulcers so you may be trading one demon for another. I'd only give it to her on the kinds of days when we tend to feel our arthritis the most. i.e. cold, rainy days.

My 12 year old Bassett Hound gets bound up from arthritis pretty bad and I tried the glucosamine without much result. The Rimadyl works OK most of the time; I even cut it in half many days, but when she's REAL stiff, a wholepill in her food works fairly well. Our vet referred to it as doggy Tylenol. It ain't cheap, like 40 bucks for 30 pills, but it lets her walk around an sniff out things which what a Bassett does best.

Sabachka (my Collie/Husky) was on Rimadyl as well. I couldn't remember the name of it. Not everyone responds to GC and dogs are no exception. Just keep in mind that it takes a couple of months to realize the benefits so don't give up too soon.

If you have an Atwoods Store near you, they have glucosamine?chrondrointin in the large dog bones called "Hip & Joint". Get the large ones if your dog is any size at all. My 14 year old has been eatine two a day for over 2 years now. She is slowing down some now, but they still help her...Jim

This thread is great but it cuts into my Soul like a knife. :' I was gone for 5 weeks to nurse my old man who finally passed while I gave him a Bear Hug... I lost my best human friend! After his burial, I flew back to California. When I got home from the airport, close to midnight, all I could hear was "Lloyd" jumping up and down, crying for a big hug and a frantic likin' of my face... I rushed my luggage into the house and went into the garage to share our reciprocal love! After loosing my Old Man, I still treasure that moment with Lloyd.! NOTE: I live in a dark twisty canyon... great place to ride the FAT LADY for 150 miles along the crest of the mountains! Back to Lloyd... So, I am a night Owl and going for a walk w/o- a leash at midnight was routine. Predictably, as soon as I opened the garage door he will "run away" fast for 'bout 1000 feet into the darkness. He'll then turn around hauling ass even faster towards you... That my friends, is UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! That night... as he's going thru "the running back and forth drill," he was sadly, ambushed in the dark and dragged away by a pack of Coyotes... I ran after them but it was too dark and I could not catch up ... and too many of them! After 6 years, I never saw Lloyd again. He was a Golden Retriever w/-its long hair and face; mixed w/a Bermese Mountaineer. Lloyd inherited the Bermese Black, White and Gold silky coat. ; He looked like a huskier Golden Retriever. I always think of him as if he' still alive. Although, I would not have to, I'd have chosen Lloyd over my Valkyrie... any day!

Cost me 15.00 for a month supply. Will be 15.00 a month from now on. Something I forgot to add in original topic, Petsmart insited on doing the test every 6 months. 900.00 a year. If I could not find a reasonable Vet, or could not find something over the counter then yes I would pay the 900.00 a year but not about to shell out that kind of money with out research which is why i ran the topic. Thank you.

I use to work for a Vet. 1/2 adult asprin every 12 hours. Things may have changed in the time I was a Vet Teck., but it worked good then, I don't know much about the dog snacks, but it might be worth a try.
