Snyder signs repeal of Michigan's motorcycle helmet law
By The Detroit News

Lansing— Motorcycle riders for years have pushed for repeal of the state's helmet law and they finally got the green light from Gov. Rick Snyder.

Snyder signed a repeal of the state’s helmet law Thursday, and the governor’s office announced the signing Friday morning.

“While many motorcyclists will continue to wear helmets, those who choose not to deserve the latitude to make their own informed judgments as long as they meet the requirements of this new law,” Snyder said in a release. “There is no substitute for proper training, education and awareness when it comes to operating any motor vehicle.

“We must continue working together to keep our roads safe by making sure that everyone who gets behind the wheel of a car or on a motorcycle has the proper skills. Traffic safety is a responsibility shared by all motorists.”

Motorcyclists 21 and older will no longer have to wear a helmet if they meet certain training or experience requirements, and carry a $20,000 policy.

Michigan's mandatory motorcycle helmet requirement was repealed by the Legislature earlier this month.

The governor has until Monday to sign or veto the bill; if he did nothing, it would have automatically become law.

Snyder last year said he would consider repealing the helmet requirement only as part of broad no-fault auto insurance reform, which the Legislature has not delivered.

Sounds like a step in the right direction...

BUT...  How is it determined that a rider, cruzin' down the road, without a helmet, has the 'training', and a $20K policy?  Is that something that would come up, say if stopped for another infraction (speeding), or are riders subject to 'spot checks'?

Just wunderin'  uglystupid2

Lets not jump the gun MI riders.

There is a 20K accident/injury requirement stipulation attached. Before you take a ride without your skid lid, you'd better check with your insurance agent to be sure that it is suffient and meets the states criteria.

I heard that was moving through Lansing.
Being an avid member of ABATE, I do believe in the freedom of choice.

However, I will probably be 'choosing' to have one on my dome.

Well, I am all for choice.... but, I won't ride with out (in the been down, Done that club)......My choice.

Lets just see what happens to my insurance rates over the next several months... ???

I have full coverage already and should/do meet the $20K....

In other states.. do they make all riders carry the extra coverage? Or can you opt out?

You can bet your ASS that the insurance industry is going to try to raise rates.
However here in MI, they must show "just cause" to increase rates.

The modification of the helmet law does not mean that your current policy will be "legal" as of today if you choose to go helmetless.

Err on the side of caution, and check if your policy covers your "freedom of choice".

Decided not to be so cursed lazy. I answered my own question:

"Motorcyclists can forgo a helmet if they are at least 21 years old, carry at least an additional $20,000 in medical insurance and have either passed a motorcycle safety course or had their motorcycle endorsement for at least two years. Passengers also must be 21 or older to go helmetless, and there has to be an additional $20,000 in insurance for the passenger, bought either by the passenger or the motorcycle driver."

Cool. Mel and I would have still worn our helmets to Inzane last year no matter what the law. But, it would have been nice to leave em at the motel when riding down to wash the bike or grab a meal just as we sometimes do at home.

in Fl. we are required to carry $10,000 in insurance, if riding without a helmet. any medical insurance qualifies. also the insurance companies offer this optional rider for your bike. mine cost an extra $23.00 a year.

I could amend that saying from first hand experience. There are 2 kinds of bikers; those who have flown over their handlebars in excess of 45mph and those who haven't. I wasn't wearing a helmet and lived to ride again. But now I wear one...my choice.

Texas is the same way,

Over 21, 10K of savings, or min 10K medical insurance, or file a form and send 15 bucks to the state and they will send you a sticker for your liscene plate that is good for 3 yrs.
They do not stop you to check for your coverage, but if you are stopped for OTHER reasons and are helmetless, you will have to show current medical insurance or point to the sticker. Not sure how you prove you have the 10K in the bank.

Least that was the set-up in place when I left last year!

This part is ridiculous. WTF is 20k insurance going to do when you crack your melon open? With today's health care costs, that's about a ride halfway to the ER, a bandaid and a couple of aspirin.  uglystupid2

I don't care about the law anyway, I'm smart enough not to ride without a helmet.

That's what it's all about respect and choice. I will wear mine because that is my choice. Everyone should be able meet the insurance requirement, 20 grand isn't much coverage and should have that anyway. I think saying you are paying to ride without a helmet is a stretch. In Michigan you can't get your cycle endorsement without the MC safty class or the experience one or the other. This is a win for all the riders and business in this great state. Come up and ride and please spend some money.

When I started riding, there was no such thing as any kind of protective helmet. Neither was there any laws concerning helmets or special endorsement for riding a motorcycle. I rode back then with goggles and a "Snoopy' aviator cap.

However, I did need to have a valid drivers license to ride my Whizzer motorbike.  Today, in Indiana, no license is needed to ride a moped and helmets are not required for older motorcyclists.

I do have a kinda personal opinion about requiring proof of insurance when riding without a helmet in some states. This is a tacit acknowledgment that riding motorcycles is dangerous and we must be forced to pay for injuries to ourselves.  I can see why but to me, it's just another  form of government harassment.

At any rate, I wear a helmet all of the time and don't need to be concerned as to what state I'm in.

For what it's worth, it's easier for an LEO to check for helmet wearing than it is for seat belt wearing.  Yet,  no one seems to complain too much about the seat belt laws, maybe they just don't buckle up.
