There was discussion last night at the Houston meeting, about the location.  Originally I wanted to have a rotating location, so it would always be in someone's backyard.  It appeared to set us up for confusion on where the meeting was each time.  I have since wanted something central, partially to keep the group accessible to everyone in Houston, and partially not to appear biased to my side of town.

I would like to hear from folks in the general Houston area.
If you show up to our meetings, tell us what would stop you from showing up.
If you don't, tell us what would get you to come out.
What part of town is preferable/prohibitive?  I've heard some negatives about the traffic in the area of our current venue, so I'm definitely open to a change.  I'm somewhat disinclined to move our meetings southward and ensure that we don't EVER get anyone from the north side to come out, but we need to hear from some northsiders for motivation to keep things within reach of their part of town.  Should we go back to the rotation?  Should we pick a different place and stick with it?  Should we do something completely different?

I'm primarily looking for location comments.  If you have format comments, I'd like to discuss them separately, so either an email, or a separate topic, or bring it up to me in person.

Just a note from your brother up north....

We had one central meeting place for the last 7-8 years and attendance was OK but became less and less as time went by.  Our last meetings at the central place (Joe's Crab Shack) had 5 people.

Now we are rotating with different members volunteering to setup the meeting location, talk to the restaurant, etc.  It's more of a dinner ride (separately) to new places and the attendance is averaging 25-30 people per meeting and we're having fun invading HD dominated restaurants with the fat ladies.  People that had stopped coming to anything are now participating in these dinner meetings.

No one can truly complain about being too far away for a meeting.  If they want one closer, they only need to volunteer to "host" by setting up the seats with the restaurant they want to eat at.  And most people like to ride, so for me, further away is actually better.  Of course, in Houston, where traffic is a four letter word, this may not be the same.

We also have dropped most of the "meeting" parts.  We announce upcoming rides, talk about where we rode last and then have door prizes.  Very informal but it fits the membership.

This may or may not help with your decision, but hope it helps.

Thanks for the summary.  I'd been following ya'll's progress peripherally, so I had at least a general idea of what you were doing.  Glad to hear it's working.
As for the "meeting" parts, we've never had that.  I'm not much on formality.  I like to eat, and I like to talk.  So, we eat, and we talk.  Upcoming/past rides, maintenance issues, what you had for dinner last night, all are valid topics.
We'll see how the locals want to do things.

Didn't mean to stirr the pot there Rocketman.  Just noticed that the people at the dinner meeting were all from the South part of town.  Well, Jeff is moving to Pearland and will be South of town.

I am new to this group and BJ and I are REAL flexible.  I'm so flexible I can touch my........oh nevermind....

Go ahead, other people chime in and make some suggestions.

Keep watching this board.  We'll decide soon where to have it.
The when should not change, and that's the third Wednesday of every month, at 7 PM.

I'll add a vote for a south of Houston meet, and a rotation sounds good to get some of the Houston "Yankees" (north side  Wink ) to some meets as well.

Last time I drove Houston traffic was the day I picked up my fat lady, 10 minutes old and one close call was enough!

Doesn't matter to me where the meetings are, I miss very few when I'm in town.

I will point out, though, that we started out rotating around the area, and finally decided to pick a semi-central place and stick to it.  That way, everyone would know when and where.  Truthfully, as I recall, our best turnouts were in the Tomball area, and one darned near in Katy.  Of course, we all know my memory is as sharp as a sieve...

I kinda liked the rotation idea, but it had its disadvantages.  I also like the excuse to ride a little longer on one Wednesday a month.
I haven't heard any "I will go if..." or "I won't go if..." statements.  Sounds like we're not a very demanding bunch.
Well, our next meeting date is coming up.  Does anyone want to make a suggestion?

It's almost a guarantee -- plan it for my "backyard" and I'll be out-of-town.  Sigh.

Leaving on the 9th for the Blue and Gray Ride, be home after Inzane!!!

Yea, some of us talked about the Centerville meet up at the Kerville ride.  Centerville is about half way from Houston to Dallas, so we all could meet at Centerville on Saturday around noon (or earlier), then eat, then ride for a while, split up and ride our separate ways back home.

I'm game for that if I am in town.

I'd sure like an opportunity to meet some of you folks.  A get-together in Centerville would work great for me.  About 130 miles from the house here in deep east texas.  Count me in...

I'll admit being one of the yankee's (northwest side of town) that central kinda sucks.  If we just moved the meeting back an hour, it wouldn't be nearly as big of an issue for me.  I'd even be willing to go to pearland before the richmond strip...

We tend to stick around for a while afterwards, so an hour later would put us at leaving pretty late.
Would a half hour be a good compromise?  Might give you some more time to travel, but wouldn't risk others turning into pumpkins on the ride home.  It's up for negotiation, so negotiate.

As for the location:
I think we'll go back to our rotation.  Let's start out at BJ's, since that was the lone suggestion out there.  I would like to pick a few more spots:
One in the Katy (area).  We used to go to a Mexican place near Sam's on I-10.  Still a good idea?  Yes?  No?
One up north.  I really liked Goodson's.  It's a bit of a trek for the true Southerners, but riding's what it's all about, right?  Besides, the proposed half hour delay would get us out of high traffic.  Comments?
One more central, preferably away from the stupidity of the Richmond strip.
One east of town (last time I asked for proposals east of town, I got deafening silence, so we skipped east.  If you live east of downtown (Baytown?) and want one in your backyard, holler.  Otherwise, you're out of luck.)

So, with a rotating schedule, and more notice on where we're meeting, maybe more people will be more happy.

that sounds good.  Henry Hudsons on hwy 6 could be a good Northwest location.  I'll have to ride around a bit so the bike is warmed up before I pull in...its 2 miles from my house.

I be game for a central Texas gathering on a Saturday for lunch.  Any excuse for some groceries.

Now, concerning Houston group monthly meeting.  Just recently noticed a couple of nice places that were pretty accessible down on Lyn-Del's side of town.  Right about 288 and 518.  They have a Texas Roadhouse, Fuddruckers, and a lot of others within a quarter mile.  Would have to take another look to identify all of them.  I kinda liked the meeting up in Tomball also.  That family style restaurant was very nice.

Anyway, when in town, I will try to be their.

BJ's in Pearland will be a good start.  We will ride anywhere, work near the Med Center, so I work pretty central.   We just have to leave in time to get back down South before too late.

Link to map for BJ's...

I just got my Tourer in March and haven't made a meeting yet.  The place on Chimney Rock is right on my way from the office to the HOV lane, so I sure can't say that's inconvenient.  Just lots going on.  I am pretty flexible whever everybody wants to go.

Or, if you ride a black/tan- the second wednesday.

**The preceding was only a joke.  The meeting is still scheduled for the third Wednesday (6-17).  Had this been an actual change of meeting dates, Mike would not have been so alone last night.**

Welcome to all the NEW Valkers!!!!  Glad to see they are getting recycled and not trashed.  Looking forweard to meeting everyone and catching up with all the "old timers"....  Just so much "personal" riding and scheduling.  I miss everyone.  Will try to watch the board for meeting places and dates.  Maybe an e-mail reminder to keep me in the loop...  I do not spend as much time on the PC as I did when I was working....
