I've tried all avenues.
Had used headhunters in the past, word of mouth, but most were just luck.

Each state has a jobs site.
For Florida it's

Linkedin for sure.  I picked up my last three jobs from there.  Linked in has a general search.  But, there are also special interest groups for about every type of job you can imagine.  Check out some of the groups. www.linkedin.com

I'm not looking for a job, I'm looking for an employee.

I'm getting hundreds of apps, but not qualified applicants.
Our Company uses Career builder. I was just wondering where most people go to look for work.

Not a lot of diverse people out there looking. Everyone has a specific skill they are trying to market.
My industry expects a diverse skill set.

I'm looking for an industrial maintenance mechanic, and I'm getting resumes from carpenters and A/C servicemen, and unemployed rocket propulsion guys.

This happens every time I look for help. They used to come knocking on our door, now we have to search far and wide.

Our Ga plant has been looking for a Plant Engineer for almost 2 years, and their maintenance shop is NEVER fully staffed.

I use careerbuilder too. I like the interface.

I get calls constantly from headhunters looking to fill good positions with companies like L3, BAE, Sikorsky, Lockheed Martin, Boeing... problem is they're all several states away at minimum. Some are in foreign countries. There's a ton of work in aviation but you're probably going to have to move.

jeff, when you find the right spot. could you send me a pm on where to look?  i have a similar problem.  maintenance around here is something different almost everyday.  another problem i have is that we don't pay alot for starters, until someone proves themselves as an asset to the company.   TIA!

There maybe a lot of maintenance guys like myself who would not consider moving. When I'm looking around I don't bother with anything but the local (within 50 miles) ads. I picked up my current gig from the local online classifieds 9 years ago.

Before that I had a maintenance position with Columbia Records I found in a local paper. Now, when I start to get curious about other employment I usually have a company in mind and go to their website. I think most maintenance guys check out the local want ads pretty often, always looking for more money, less aggravation, or new equipment to learn, I know I always have.

When I looked for jobs... I used the shotgun approach and sent EVERYONE I thought I could work for resume's, regardless of if they were looking or not.  Chances are that SOME of them ARE, and you just saved them the aggravation of LOOKING and eliminated any competition you might have had.

It worked for me very well.

But that doesn't help YOU.

Personally, I'd look in other peoples maintenance departments.  They guys with jobs are the ones that are worth having.  Go shopping in someone else's labor pool.

if you dont pay a competitive wage for starters then thats what you are going to get, a starter,, i pass on the low salary jobs simply because if you want someone who is experienced in mechanical and electrical and electronics and having a few degrees to back it up, then you will have to pay me either as an employee or hire me to fix something your employees cant do,, thats why i have the job i have now,, it would cost this company 250 dollar service call plus 95 dollars an hour for my services,, so they made me an offer and now i work for them directly and they save money and have me full time,,,we both win,,,

A few years ago I started posting any job openings I had available on the local college's employment website. It is free, and I get students calling me within an hour of the job being posted. I have had some of the very best employees I have ever hired come by that route. They all have cars, are quick to learn, and are pretty happy to make $10 an hour while they are going to school. I sometimes have to work around their class schedule, but otherwise no other draw-backs at all.

jeff,

i should send you my Resume.  i've been wanting to move out of this frigid artic area for the last 35 years....

i work maintenance, fast production machines that produce  200 to 275 ppm.  i'll be honest with you i love it!!  the only thing i don't like are the 12 hour days, then the 12 hour nights!!  i've done everything from rebuilding worn out driveshaft’s, to replacing 100 horse motors.  my weak spot is PLC programming, just CAN'T get my brain to figure (or remember) it out.

how did i get into this field?  by pure chance.  i was unemployed for 10 months, went to a temp agency, was hired after my temp "service" was complete.  i applied directly to the company i'm working for 6 times, got 6 rejection letters from the same guy that finally hired me!! so the question isn't "where are the qualified employee's?" it should be "why aren't we hiring people that have been fixing things for the last 15 years, but don't have the degree to prove it?"  my resume shows me as an electrician before i began working maintenance, now i've got nearly 4 years as maintenance, but still, no degree to prove it.  i'm 45, do you think i want to go to school, to "learn" what i've already experienced?

Good luck on your search.  You might want to look at the person’s hobbies, and extracurricular activities to assist in your hiring decision.  The same way as you wouldn’t hire a guy that states he likes parting on his days off, you might want to learn what they do on their time off.

Yep. Compared to "relay logic" PLC's rock. If you've got a IO diagram they make troubleshooting way easier than it used to be.

Cool. Just found 5 maintenance/tech openings in my area.  cooldude I'm not looking but I've been off work due to this leg long enough I'm starting to worry about my job a little so it's nice to know something is out there.
