Me and my Valk at Freedom Rock

« on: April 18, 2012, 04:21:19 PM »

Well, been a hard day today. Had to put the family dog down. Springer spaniel named Missy. 6 years old. Had a tumor in her pelvic region. Difficulty urinating and pooping. Been going on for some time but except for some difficulty, pretty spunky. Untill this weekend. At a PGR event and got a call while down in Marshalltown iowa from my daughter saying Missy was getting real sick. Wife took her in to the Vet yesterday and Vet reccommended we put her down today.

Well, today came and I called the Vet  about 8 this morning and made the appointment. They would do it late in the afternoon.
10 o'clock rolls around and she goes from misery to sheer agony. In her kennel screaming, breathing real labored and she is hot as the sun. I call the vet and ask to bring her in immediately and they say they can't get to her till the afternoon.

Really?

So wound up rushing her out to the old family farm (wife's side) and did it myself. Poor gal was in a bad way and the trip out was hard. Glad to put her out of her agony though.

Well, I went and picked up some Barcardi.
Time to go have some.

I had to do the same thing about 40 yrs. ago, sweetest little black mutt. She was so sick, couldn't hold her head up but if you put your hand down for her she'd lick it. At the time I was out of work and didn't have two dimes to my name and couldn't find a vet that would do it for us. So, I also went out to a friend's farm and borrowed his rifle. I carried her way out into a field near a hedgerow, pretty spot with lots of wild flowers. She licked my hand one more time then laid her head down and closed her eyes as though she knew what was coming. Broke my heart but she was also in so much agony. As with most pets, she was a family member from day one. My girls cried all night but knew why I did it.

I feel your pain.  Have done that several times with family farm dogs here.  Very emotional.

Really sorry to read this, glad you had the strength to do this yourself. Find yourself a vet that is more concerned with the animals than the money. I had my cat euthanized yesterday afternoon; the vet found time to see her three times in the past 5 days on an emergency basis; she was failing, but would show a little improvement, then slide back down. Stopped eating, then stopped drinking water, and was wheezing yesterday morning. While waiting at the vets, I was petting her, and she moved a little to give me access to her belly. Talk about heart. Have to clean up the debris in the house caused by her drooling & only being able to eat baby food, but will find another little one that needs to find a reason to trust. Sorry you had to take care of your pup, but best that it got done. You're a good guy.
