Getting Kits 'loaner' bike ready. She has been doing well even taking it out on the country road for a dozen miles or so. Throttle return seems not to return. Undid it at the bars and tightened it all up. Return is excellant. It returns at the carb but seems like not in the 'guts' of the carb. Problem is the idle. It will rev up high and then slowly return to normal. Sometimes if you rev it, it will return to normal. It will idle for a few min and then rev up for a min all on its own. Even at choke it seems to idle higher then I'd like. While on the road when shifting the carb wont return to normal, just revs high till ya shift. Idle screw has been adjusted alot. Carb were cleaned. Needle and jet was gunked up. New choke cable. Techron with new gas has been/is in it. I'm thinking it needs ran more but want your expert  Cool opinion. Only 20 miles so far on the 'cleaned' carb.

I would start out with running it more. By the time you get a whole tank of fuel/cleaner through it, should be clean. I have no idea how the carb on that bike works, but with all the work you have done already, not much left to do. Sure the carb is adjusted correctly? Check for leaks? Could take some spray type starter fluid and spray around the carb when it's running (before it gets hot) and if the idle picks up, there will be a leak. Don't use too much, it wll stain or remove paint! Hope this helps some cooldude

Not sure about carb adj or how to. I put it all back in the way it was. Did spray ether and no change. Only 1500 miles on the bike.

Sounds like you got an air leak somewhere.   Like suggested, spray around the carb area.    When it rev a little, there is a leak at that point.    Use WD40 it doesn't leave a stain.

No find nothing, use some SeaFoam or Techron or whatever else tickles ur innards.   Ride it under 3K and once ya has done that, bring it home and let it set all night with a good shot of one of the above to do their work.   Then take it out the next evening and do the same thing again.   If that doesn't bring it out of it, pull that carb again and check all your settings.

Here is a good carb link.

I have owned two Virago's a 750 and 1100. I did know Yamaha made these in a 250. I never had carb issues, just starter gear and fly wheel engagement problems as the teeth would round over.

I think that little monster has a round slide Mikuni.. It sounds as if there is a sticky / burred slide or bore.. Maybe a diaphram leak.. Is the cable adjusted correctly ?? My first thought was varnish, but, you said you cleaned it..

Took it apart and cleaned it again. Thx RJ for the link!  cooldude Buttoned it all up and took it for a spin. It does not hold rpms at shift any more. Which was my main concern. At idle it still surges but not as bad. So I'm getting closer.
