THis summer I plan on taking a CDL A class and becoming a truck driver.

I thought I would apply for a TWIC card to make myself more valuable to some potential employers.

You need a TWIC to get into secure areas at ports to pick up loads.

I have seen local driving job ads asking for TWIC cards.

You will need a TWIC™ to gain unescorted access to secure areas of Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) regulated facilities and vessels.

Possession of a TWIC™ does not guarantee access to secure areas because the owner/operator controls which individuals are granted unescorted access to the facility or vessel. Rather, TWIC™ is a secure, verified credential that can be used in conjunction with the owner/operator's risk-based security program that is required in security regulations issued by the Coast Guard.

However in their wisdom the prats have decided the ONLY places one can apply for a TWIC is at some designated port cities.

The nearest port to me is Savannah - 256 miles away. The process demands 2 VISITS to an enrollment center.

What does a driver living in central Oklahoma do??? Did anyone in the Fed Govt try to use their little brain to understand this may cause a problem for some applicants.

Aren't  the various departments of the TSA communicating or are they more interested in flying around looking quasi military.?

And these dolts think they can run a health care system.  Cheesy

I've got a TWIC card.  I've had it for almost a year and have used it only 4 times.   I pull a  chemical tanker, (I have my HAZMAT endorsement) and pull a lot of  liquid HAZMAT products, a lot of our customers require the card for entry.   The chemical companies I frequent are starting to ask for it more.  I had to go to Houston, TX for mine.  I live in Fort Worth but we are always going to the coast or ports.  Took me about 1 month for the background check with Homeland Security and the FBI, ect.  Had to give fingerprints too.   Thankfully the company paid for it.  I think it was about $160 or so.  If you are going for your CDL, you may want to get all of your endorsements, doubles, tanker, ect.  Reason being if you go to another company, having the extra endorsements will make you a bit for valuable, and you won't have to test again to have those other endorsements added to your license.  Granted, you may never pull doubles, ect, but better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.   A lot of these govt agencies have never heard of shared info or communicate with one another.  Surprise, nothing new with this govt.   tickedoff  IMHO. Try getting on a military installation.  If you've ever been charged with anything, you ain't gettin' on.  We've had more than several deliveries show up at the gate only have them sit there untill a relief driver can show up that can get on base.

I have to disagree with that. I would think security would be tight but....

I have a felony record and a long list of various misdemeanors. I used to be a bad man. But things have changed, I learned my lessons.

Anyway, I go to military bases every couple of months. Noone has ever asked about my past. Noone. They ask for my DL and take my camera and cell phone because of the camera and let me be. Never search the truck nor my person.

As far as the TWIC goes, I consider mine to be a $140 waste of time and money. I have had mine for 4 years or so and have used it twice. I do try to stay out of ports as they are a guaranteed cluster f*ck everytime I enter one, but I have only had to present it two times. I believe one time was Houston and maybe Baltimore? I don't remember. I had to pay for mine out of pocket. I won't be renewing it, at least for my current employer. If they want to pay for it, I will. If I have to pay...I have better things to spend time and money on besides something as useful to me as my own nipples.

I never got any endorsements because of cost vs. useage. It will cost me $95 to apply for HAZMAT and with a felony record, chances are I'll get denied. No refund for me. Doubles and Triples earn more money, but around me they are usually FedEx and I won't get hired there. Tankers don't interest me so I don't bother. Not saying you shouldn't get them, just my experiences and reasoning why I don't.

Security is tighter than tight.  It might depend on the branch of military...or the base itself (depending on the base commander's rules), but I can promise you, if you have a felony record and you delilver to us, you ain't gettin' on where I work.....period.  We've experienced it way too many times already.

To answer your question Britman, Oklahoma City.

If you try to do a locate office using the TSA web page, it only looks 250 miles from adress or zip code.  Any area that has a refinery or chemical plant will have an office.  You will need to call that office to make an appointment instead of trying to use the web page,

Unfortuately the "TWIC" card is controlled by the the Great Department of Homeland Security and thus you can inferr anything you want.

Wait till you do the paper work and have to sign the questionaire asking such questions as "Have you ever been arrested as a terrorist"?

And I believe the cost is approximately $134 good for four years.  I use mine as my government issued ID to get on an airplane.  Here's the grand intellegence.  Homeland Security issues the card, but depending on the TSA individual they have no clue what it is.  Who'd of thunk that.

If that's the case why do they only have ports listed on their web site.

http://twicinformation.tsa.dhs.gov/twicinfo/schedule.jsp

After more searching I found one in Chattanooga.

You want me to explain The Department of Homeland Security?  I'm not that smart Paul.  I went through the same thing as you and had to call customer service to learn the information that I gave you.

In June '10 I had to renew my CG Capt license and had to get my first TWIC card.  At that time, the nearest location was Chattanooga because it is/was a port city.  Upon arrival, I expected to see a large DHS operation on the banks of the river, but, they had contracted it to a UPS store in a strip mall.  I had filled out the info online so they only just had to take a photo and get digital fingerprints, was in and out in about 15 minutes.  They said it would take 4-6 weeks but it was back in less than a week.  All those above addresse's that indicate "suite x" are likley a UPS store or something similar.

I would encourage you Paul to do as much of the paperwork on line.  Make sure you have all your documents, and don't miss you scheduled appointment.  In 2009 it was six weeks before you could re-establish another appointment.

The time it takes to get the card depends on how much they have to do in the initial investigation.  If you have had a passport, security clearance, or anything like that then it doesn't take long.

Look at it this way.  Throw a leg over the ST and get a day of riding in with an inconvienence stop in Chattanooga.
