My class ends today. He is mentioning ending early after lunch which is interesting. So far not a bad start to my courses here in Indiana PA. Tomorrow I think I'm heading to Latrobe, PA. The purpose of the trip is to get to see St. Vincent Abbey. I studied and now work at Belmont Abbey in NC, which is connected to St. Vin, so since I'm this close, I'm heading down the highway. The purpose of this post (had to get to it eventually) is for suggestions of anything else to look at in Latrobe. Don't know much about it besides the Abbey and the college. I'll be sure to bring back pics. I'm going to throw a few pics up below. Keep scrolling they're down there. Here is one to tide you over. Now, keep scrolling for the rest of the pics.

You could pay your respects to the Latrobe Brewing Company...... Birth place of 119 Jefferson Street PO Box 350 Latrobe, PA 15650 Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp, Steelers at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA..... but that won't start til July I believe. Not too far down the road on RT30 is the Norwin Car Cruise on Saturday evenings (if you are still in the area).... nice gathering of people, cars and bike. I'm not that far from Norwin or Latrobe for that matter .......but this weekend is booked for me. Have a nice visit.

A nice ride is down rt.30 from Latrobe. Start at Arnold Palmer Airport, ( intersection of 981 & rt 30 ) and go east to Ligonier Pa. You will pass Idelwild Park on right. In Ligonier (nice town) you could return back west on 30 again(one way east and west). Rt 217 to Derry& Blairsville, will get you to north rt119 and back to Indiana.

I didn't realize the steelers use St. Vincent. Interesting. I'm not much of a football fan in general. It only occurred to me later that I moved up to Western PA wearing my yellow kevlar shirt and my black leather jacket which are Steeler appropriate. I've heard of rolling rock. Never drank it. Not much of a beer guy either. I do like breweries. I wonder if they do a tour? I like brewery tours. Dino, I always like the sound of "it's a nice ride if..." Hwy 30 is slightly historic as Lincoln Highway right? Wasn't that discussed on here a few months ago? Might be nice to check a chunk of that out. I'll jot that recommend on the back of the directions on how I'm getting down there. Thanks guys. BTW Dino, I did finally take my bike over and give it a quick once over at the car wash by the Honda shop to get the grime off of her.

And if you want to blend in, don't call it Latrobe. Its Lay-Trobe. While there you could drop in on Z&M motorcycles and see if they have any stray Valkyrie accessories left. -RP

I missed ZM. Oh well. I did see the Grist Mill that is original to the property. It was the first building built at the Abbey. It is a coal powered grist mill which makes it odd. still works. Coffee house in the bottom.

The Abbey was easy to find once I got there. I looked around for a while. I had a bite and a cup of hot chocolate at the Grist Mill just to pass the time for a little bit. Then on to Latrobe (Lay-trobe) to have a look around.

I took the Old Lincoln Hwy for a while. I passed Idlewild Park. I turned and went toward a few PA state parks. Then when I was tired of potholes...the pavement ran out. Oddly enough the gravel road was smoother than the paved. Laurel Summit Park. I didn't get any pics on the gravel road. I was doing well at about 15 mph. The speed limit was 25, but at about 20 the rear tire kept deciding it wanted to see what was up ahead and trying to peak out around the rest of the bike. I took it slow and road the crown where it was flat. That worked until I met other traffic when I had to ride down on the ragged edge that was rounded. The bike was DUSTY afterwards. Ate a hot dog down the road, then back up Hwy 30 West. Pretty road.

i'm not even sure it is still in town anymore... I did however, meet a brewmaster. former brewmaster. He was working the gift shop at the grist mill. He designed a light rolling rock. Interesting. He says the art is dying out. Don't know what he meant. He told me stories about presidents visiting the area. President Bush I (after out of office) bought a belt at the k-mart.

Great pics thanks. We lived in western PA for 17 years and rode past St Vincents dozens of times but never went up to it. -RP
