1998 Standard 74K
I am changing the rear wheel bearings and had the stealer remove them and now I am not sure which bearing goes to which side? Checked the manual and it does not really say much other than there are 2 different size bearings. Better knowledge of this adventure would be really appreciated.
and the collar that goes in the middle that the axel goes through...how can one be certain that it is in there correctly?

Hi Jack, Thanks for the input.  I hope the practice comes after needing a set of bearings in later years not while duriing assembly  For the bearing on the brake side..does it seat all the way down alowing for the seal and the spacer to fit? Gregg

Yes, it sits all the way down/in, this allows room for the seal, and the correct distance for the spacer. It needs to be that way, once the rear axle is torqued no space will remain in the assembly.

And when driving it in make absolutely certain you're only contacting the outer race. If banging on the inner section where the axle passes through, go ahead and buy a spare because you'll need it soon.

Just did my wheel dampers and left rear bearing today also. Mine was a peta. I don't enjoy wrenching anymore. Old broken feet, ribs and knee don't allow me to move and work like I used too. Unfortunately, I think it's the last time for me pulling that rear wheel.

Doug.....here kitty, kitty.  You ain't old enough to start all that complainin'. But I know what you mean, working on that restoration project I also realized I don't bend like I did when I was 20 yrs. younger.  So, did you get it all back together?

How did you remove the L wheel bearing. With the spacer/collar that's situated between the two bearings, through which the axle fits, does a bearing puller fit where it can grip the interior of the race so it can be removed? It's gotta come out but I'm wondering if it only comes out in pieces.
If one were to go through the R side to tap out the L by applying force to the inside of the L bearing outer race, like using a couple of extentions and a socket, how does the collar get moved to one side so one can run the tool through the center of the tire?
Is this easier than it sounds? I gotta do this ths week but nought I'd ask now.

Can't be much help with removal of the bearings. I had the stealer remove them for me.

Lay the wheel on its left side. Then take a socket the size of the inner race. Put it on the right bearing's inner race and tap it with a ball peen hammer. The force will transfer through the spacer and cause the left bearing to move out enough so you can get a bearing puller in to remove it.

I tapped it from the right side. Just barely enough of a lip to catch on, worked my way around the bearing gently, when it was about 1/8" out, gave it a good wack and thats all she wrote. I had to do it twice, because I put the new bearing in without the spacer  Ruined the new Honda bearing getting it back out. Auto parts store put a micrometer on it and matched it up to one of there good bearings.

Marty that no workie if youre not replacing the right bearing...........that tapping on the inner race is no good for the future of tht right hand bearing.
