A friend is one who takes me for what I am.

Cleveland, Tennessee

« on: April 27, 2012, 08:19:59 PM »

I was working on my sons Cabin Cruiser today that was dry docked. I slipped off the back of the boat which was about 5 ft off the ground, and landed flat on my back onto a gravel parking lot. When I hit the ground I knew I was hurt bad. I must have passed out that time, because the next thing I remember I was holding myself up by the back of the boat and had blood dripping from my head, back, and elbows. I called 911 and was soon on my way to the hospital. After several hrs of x-rays,CT scans, and severe pain, the doctor showed up to inform me I had several broken ribs, two chipped bones in my spine, and a slight concussion. I am back home now and on some strong pain killers, wondering about my riding season ahead. I hope it will be a short term lay-off, and not a long term thing. I will rest for a couple of weeks to see. I will have plenting of time to spend reading thr VRCC.

I will be 55 on july 3rd, and this is the second time I have broken my ribs. The first time I was only 25 yrs old, and went to work the next day for fear of losing the job. I had back problems for several years after that one. I plan on taking plenty or R&R this time around.

Falling down ain't like when we was kids when you could just get up and dust yourself off.

Nowadays, that crap hurts and can have serious implications to boot.  Here's to a speedy recovery.   cooldude

sorry to hear, sounds like you better listen to the doc's and heal up. Broken ribs and chips bones in your spine is nothing to mess with and people have a tendency to make light of a concussion words of advice DON'T I had a double concussion 3 yrs ago and suffered short term memory loss for quite awhile. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to hear about the fall, sounds like you'll need some serious "take it easy" time. I hurt my ribs working on a truck for a friend and they still bother me daily, and that was 7 years ago. The older we get the longer it takes to heal, so don't rush it.

ATGATT!   Wink

Take those drugs and heal up quickly!  If you treat yourself right, bones should take about 6 weeks to heal... plenty of riding season left.

I'm kinda wondering, where are the fragments from the chipped bones are lying?
Did the doc mention their position?  They could be problematic.

I have a breathing excersize thingy to help my lungs get better. I have to do it twice an hour. Other than that there is nothing I can do but lay here and rest and read about everyone else riding their Valks.....So please start posting some more ride reports cooldude

If your body says "I don't want to do anything!", please listen to it. Take the time to heal, and as others have said, TAKE THE DRUGS. Even though you're still feeling pain, it would be much worse without them, and they will become more effective with time. I think it's worse when it's a non-riding injury that affects our riding time. I never go up or down stairs without holding on to the railing anymore. T-Bird, hope the pain goes away soon, and you can rest easy and heal quickly.

Just saw this  Sad   Hate to hear this Terry just lay around and chill out time will do the rest. 40 days until " Return To Hillbilly Highway " . 82 day until " InZane " . I rode out to Texas in 2009 with blood soakin' my shirt from a lung surgery scar I think that trip helped me heal more than laying around the house as I was going nuts doing that. Take care my friend and heal fast  cooldude
