I posted about a ride to eat at Grits and Groceries and to see an old (the original part of the
house was built pre-1800) South Carolina dog-trot house.
Smokin' Joe and DDT showed up in South Carolina last night. We had planned a Friday
night ride up the mountain to a BBQ place, but around the time they got to South
Carolina, the bottom dropped out, and they got soaked to the bone. Carolyn and I
showed up at the motel in her Civic (Joe insisted that I didn't bring my sissy-a**
Mini Cooper

) and we went in the rain to the BBQ house.
Next morning, a good crowd showed up at the motel... by AOS time there were six of us,
Shades, Joe, DDT, Dennis Big-T and me...

When we got to Grits and Groceries, Britman, Roger, (brain-fade

) and Stanley Steamer
were there. Stanley Steamer got there a little before everyone else, so there was no food left.

We headed off in a crooked direction toward the Hutchinson house, I made a couple of wrong
turns, but I think they were only aware of the one where the road ended

...
John Lawrence was there, and he knew everything there was to know about the history of
the place, he knew the people who lived there (until the late 80's) and had lots of stories to
tell. He showed us all over the place, in every room, upstairs and in all the out buildings...
THANKS JOHN!

Here's the money shot...

They used to use newspapers for wall paper... there was still some up in the living room,
from the 30s and 40s... John said if you looked hard enough, you could find stories about
Hitler up there... I took some pictures, here's the most identifiable bit I could cross-reference:

Apparently this Lon Warneke fellow Blanked the Giants at will, put "warneke blanks giants" into
google and you'll see that headline twice in the 30's and once in 1941...
After we left the house, we decided to head to the mountains, so by 3:00 or so, we were all
sitting at the South Carolina Georgia line at the Chattooga River...

Here's a link to some pictures and information on the Farm, the folks were still living
there when the pictures were taken... scroll to the bottom of the link for some good color
pictures...
