Hey Spidey you did nothing really wrong, the Pingles don't really have a reserve its the cover on the fuel screen that determines the reserve. You can research it in the archives and it will tell you exactly what to do to fix this its really simple. Found and included the link below click and learn  cooldude

When I installed a Pingel in my Tourer ChrisJ357 advised me the reserve would be about half due to the shortness of the pickup tube.  I could have removed the screen and extended the pickup tube but decided I'd rather have the screen.

Yep!  And now it's been well over five years and still no problems with it. The shorter pickup tube is why your reserve is so much less, the additional length corrects that but neither screen will fit...Pingle or OEM. Hence the need for an external filter.

If you are going to sweat on a longer tube, be aware that heat will destroy the 'O'-rings inside the petcock.

This has already been reported in the forum.

So employing a proper procedure is imperative.

Jus sayin'

I will rebuild the OEM when I get a chance.  Thanks for the advice.

You're correct, but I don't recall seeing anything posted with that problem. I sweated mine on using a soldering gun, not a flame. Only needed to get warm enough to melt the solder medium and the pickup tube below it near the body was quite cool. Just like me.  Cheesy

If you click on the link you'll see the extension tube doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the pickup tube. You just rough up the top 1/4" of the pickup tube and slide the extension over it. By using a soldering gun instead of a flame, the heat is localized instead of the entire tube being heated. Plus, I wrapped the bottom portion of the tube with some tinfoil held in place with  forceps. It got a little warm but the tube was nearly room temp. I think using a gun instead of a flame was the difference.

If soldering the thing on is the problem then I know a epoxy called Marine tex that will do the job. If you put the tube on just mix a little epoxy and put it around the base of the extension tube and that should hold it fine. I have used this epoxy in gas before and it has held fine. Most any marine store and some hardware stores will carry it.

follow up on Pingle fuel valve...

I installed a model 1311-CH yesterday and had a chance to test it out today.  Using the lever positions in the picture in my previous post I ran the main tank out and switched to reserve and got 19.8 miles (@ 65 mph highway riding) before running out on reserve.
