OK, I went and picked up my new rear tire today. Falken Ziex ZE612 205/55/R16
I says it is Unidriectional, but it also has OUTSIDE marked on the sidewall & INSIDE marked on the other side on the sidewall.
Does it matter what direction it's mounted on the rim?

Yes it does for a rear tire it should be with the arrow in the direction of rotation.
On some hi powered sports cars the rear tires are left and rights and arent really interchangable due to their specific tread patterns.
So depending on which you got, a left or a right the arrows matter.

The tires being marked "outside" and "inside" has nothing to do with direction of rotation.

Why did you pick a tire with an asymmetrical tread?  You should have gotten one with a symmetrical tread so the effect on handling would the same for right & left turns.

I wouldn't get too concerned bout mounting direction with that tire, based on the tread pattern.  Whichever way you like should be fine.  As far as I'm concerned, using a directional tire vs. non-directional tread patterns is purely a matter of looks.

In a wide tread tire (larger footprint).

Tread pattern has an increasing affect on water dispersion.

To what degree will be determined by how the tire is mounted (rotationally speaking).

I mounted my Ziex 912 with the "outside" on the right side. I don't think it really matters which way you mount it. The blocks on the tire are closer together on the "outside" side of the tire, I believe it reduces tire squirm when cornering, when mounted on a car.
