1997 Valk owner switching back from  a Car Tire to a Motorcycle Specific Tire.

Splines Shot and looked good when he started his Dark Side Journey.

Lucky 13 installed his first tire a Motorcycle Specific and at that time splines  looked like new, I saw them as well before his

short journey to the dark side.

Welcome back WImp,

The secret on the splines is you STILL have to break it down and lube them frequently.

If you only do it when you change a tire with 30-40,000 miles you will lose your splines.

Last time he broke it down for lube he got the bad news.

Joe says Wimp has another, not new.

This is a running joke to most of the WIld Bunch, we don't care either way, about I don't care what you run in the

crank case for lube as long as it's not spraying on me, kinda deal.

ALthough I was behind a Dark Sider the other day I thought was going to be leaking something pretty soon, either Number 2 or the Red Stuff.

Good luck on the Car tire thing.

i tear down the rear end every 8-10,000 miles and still am in great shape. many many miles on ct's. think it's probably a maint. issue.

Chewing up the splines is one of two:
1) Bad assembly order (failure to loosen the 4 final drive nuts and tighten them last).
2) Bad left bearing.

# 1 is the most common.

I agree.

I have a pet theory about BMW final drive failures (catching fire) being due to the improper torqueing of the rear end.

But that's just my idle thought.

I just installed a car tire on Mr. Arn's valkyrie today. His splines were in great shape. We will see how they are in about 10,000 miles. Mine are in great shape after about 30,000 miles with a car tire.

I have 148 thousand on my bike. Over 80 thousand of those miles have been with a CT and royal purple grease and the splines still look new. Just gotta do the maint. I heard a guy at the honda shop said that CTs are the reason that most clutches go out. Well I can see that if your doing burnouts with them. I never told my valk that it has a CT on it so maybe It'll be ok. Smiley
