Went into Cape Charles today and found this in the rail yard:

16" gun off the Missouri, of Japanese surrender fame. Supposed to be taken
to the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge sometime in the future.
Will cost $50 K to move it 12 miles.

It is amazing that nine of those big boys were on those ships.  And they have fired all nine at once - - talk about the "big bang".  The muzzle blast would peal the paint off of the decks.

On the U S S Yorktown C V S 10 now retired-i stood a little above and behind a 5" 38 mount when they fired. It shook me to my core. And the 5" 38 is a little less than a third of the size of that 16" rifle that was on the big Mo. Wink The Yamato-a Japanese battle ship i believe had 18.1 guns on her. Thank GOD we sank her before she could break out and get to our fleet. They needed those 16 inchers in Korea Vietnam and that gulf thingy that's still going on. RIDE SAFE.

Actually, if you figure the area of the barrel it is 1/10th the size of the 16" gun. That is one big gun!

they did a write up once in guns and ammo. 6 -110 lbs bags of black powder propelled a 2100 lbs shell tens of thousands of yards (can't remember exactly how far)
a gun crew could put 2 rounds per minute into a target the size of a football feild, from miles away. simply awesome!

I was at the Eastern Shore Wildlife Refuge on Monday where I was told about the Gun
at the Rail yard. One of thr Refugees told me it was off the MO.
It's off a battleship, but not the MO, as she currently is at Pearl Harbor.
