first start of the day when she is cold there is a light growl that sounds like it maybe from the timing cover area..it is so low that it is barely audible and after the first start and warm up it doesnt happen again until the new cold start..thought I might need to take off the cover and have alook but dont know for sure what to look for.belt tensioners maybe??.anyone have any ideas??thanks in advance

It could be an idler bearing starting to fail, but, they don't seem to fail very often.. Could also be rubber buildup on the tensioners..

What brand and weight are you running?
MGM had a little like growl as you called it when I run Honda oil.
Switched over to Mobil 1 (car) and it went away.
That was like 200K ago.

My advise:
Take the cover off and look around. Most likely, you'll see nothing wrong. Put the cover back on. Forget about it. Follow Zeus's advise.
