This one quote is from an Hispanic guy. Go figure.  2funny

A small point, he's not saying "... the crystal in which one sees it..."
In his quote you are supposed to look "through the crystal..." not just merely look at it. Wink

At any rate, point well taken. Wink

"I lie to myself all the time, but I never believe me."
Somebody
Paxton/  I'm back on board with you on this ending quote.

And in my modification to your earlier "de la Barca" quote: I meant to say, "color of the crystal through which we see it."   I acknowledge we all have our "biases" that influence our perceptions.

Our biases may be somewhat a natural, good thing:  The caveman who didn't learn anything from seeing a friend eaten by a sabretoothed cat, likely himself became a victim of Darwin's law.  He might should have viewed the carnivore with the bias he gained from his previous experence.

What if Romney threw out a "celebrate European-Americans" election campaign slogan?

***ahem*** The VAST majority of this country's history has been a "celebrate European-Americans" extended block party. Sloganeering would be rubbing it in.

What you're missing here is that for a couple hundred years black Americans were not treated with much respect. In fact, they were treated as animals for a couple hundred years. Ignorance and contempt for what black Americans lived through persists to this day. I remember one of the first threads I saw here on this forum was a member decrying the fact that blacks and whites were making babies together. Oh the horror!

Would you tell the Jews to stop whining about the Holocaust? I hear people in one breath claim that we need to be vigilant against government intrusion and abuse of power and then complain that black Americans are doing the same to see that the progress that's been made does not backslide. I don't blame black Americans for staying vigilant. I'd rather they take pride in their past than use it as an excuse to behave poorly.

a lot of people have suffered through out human history, GET OVER IT!  with that same thought, why isn't there an "American-Indian" day??

Profiling?

Yeah, maybe a little.

I wouldn't go stumbling up into a strange back yard that had a pit bull in it without first taking a minute to establish that he was one of the friendly ones.  More than likely we would be good friends after we got to know each other.

That said, I refuse to evaluate rattlesnakes on a case by case basis.  I have a pretty good idea what will happen if I decide to chum up next to one.

That said,  I view these gentlemen standing on the corner down in my local hood as rattlesnakes.  It is not their color, their hoodies, the fact that every few minutes they walk up to a car, prop their elbows in the window, "talk" for 20 seconds and walk away.  I profile them and am biased against them.  If I had a daughter, I would not approve of her dating one of them.

I remember the story about a bank being robbed and two men excaped in a green Toyota.  The cops set up a road block and made all the cars stop and wait to be checked out but let a green Toyota pass unchecked.  When the chief asked, why didn't you stop the green Toyota, the officers replied, "we didn't want anybody to accuse us of profiling."

But they should just "get over it"?

As you said; lots of people have suffered. Why SHOULD the Jews whine where others have no right to? Why does it bother you that they don't but others do?

QUOTE from Alph: "... why isn't there an "American-Indian" day?? ..."

====================================================

No kiddin'. In the past 20 or so years, the "professional left" has concluded that Cristforo Colombo was genocidal towards our natives.  Shocked
So whereas the concept has not spread throughout the nation, several jurisdictions have adopted this view.  ???

For example, in the City of Berkeley, California, Cristoforo Colombo's day is now called "Indigenous People's Day,"  Wink
in honor of the Native American (250+) Nations. Only "Flag Day" has beaten it in popularity.  Embarrassed  2funny

Theres nothing wrong with profiling.  Criminal profiling is necessary and has been going on since there have been investigations.  A good criminal profile includes race, size weight, age, behavior etc.

The most narrow deffinition of RACIAL profiling, the form that should be illegal is when race alone is the only criterion.  Using only one physical attribute no matter what it is is not a good way to "get your man"

The problem is the lefties would have the cops be intentionally blind as far as race when establishing a profile (mostly if its a black person...or muslim, or Mexican).  Like we know a black guy did it we have him on film but his face was covered, but we cant say we are looking for a black guy because that sounds racist.  That is BS!

Perhaps a winky icon was in order.  My tongue in cheek comment was aimed at pointing out that we all profile everyday, it would be absurd to assume otherwise.  Yet we tie the hands of LE by making it a bad thing.  Let's have them waste time jacking with a 92 y/o nun, rather than appear as if they are profiling an obvious miscreant.
