Driving lesson for the high school kids on my bus

Headed south on a suburban 2 lane road.

Bus travelling at about 26 mph up a slight hil. Old bus doesn't like uphill.

Approaching a sub division entrance on my left.

Old geezer in car decides he needs to be ahead of the school bus and shoots out from the left to get in front of me.

BANG

Miscalculates approaching speed of large white pick up from his left and is spun nearly 360 in a flat circle.

Luckily for him the pickup got him just behind the rear passenger door.

Debris flying.

The bus slams to a halt. How?

I've no idea but I do realize my right foot is planted firmly on the brake pedal and my left hand is activating the hazard lights.

The front of the bus is about 8 feet from the wrecked car.

I call over the pickup driver, tell him I can't stay there and give him my phone number on a piece of paper.

There's just enough room for the bus to get through.

I ask kids if everyone is OK. Yep they are.

I then have a conversation with some of the lads at the front of the bus about muscle memory and reaction time whilst driving or riding. They know I have a bike.

They are surprised when I tell them that it takes about 1,000 repetitions for the brain to react without having to think. Some are surprised and some have already returned to the plugged in Smartphone world they spend their life in.

Hopefully they will remember the day the bus didn't hit the accident when they start to drive.

If only every bus driver were so vigilant there would be a lot less kids injured.  Good job, Britman...Jim cooldude
