...one of these:
The lightweight upper has been an aftermarket option for a long time but Ruger smartened up and decided to make one themselves. It's 9 ounces lighter than the same sized Mk III 22/45 in steel and some 20 ounces lighter than a standard Target model Mk III (the 22/45 Mk III's have a polymer frame and the standard Mk III is steel). Looks like I'm calling Riley's tomorrow!

Nice! I have a Mk III Target that I love to shoot. What's the price tag on the lite?

Ruger list it a 469.00 (aka: not cheap at all) but I suspect my people at Riley's can hook me up in the 440-ish range. They're a big Ruger dealer and they have good prices on Ruger stuff. I've had something of a rimfire boner lately. I'm training my 10 year old daughter to shoot so I picked up a 10/22 Takedown model recently and I've been having a ton of fun shooting it and ammo is cheap. It's so easy to just relax and blast when you're spending 4 bucks for 100 rounds instead of .40 cents per cartridge. I figure this will be a good way to train her on pistols. Lightweight and easy to hold up for a scrawny kid. A also just ordered a variety of subsonic ammos from Aguila so I'm itching to try those.

I assume she does. At least until I walk downrange one day and it all goes black. Maybe I shouldn't teach her too well. It's also nice because I can play the responsibility card with her. As in; if you don't show me that you're responsible you don't go shooting. Works like a charm.

That Aguila Super Colibri ammo will not cycle the semi auto. The SSS Sniper stuff has a longer lead nose bullet which has jammed in my MKIII, and P22. Have not tried it in the 10/22 or Charger yet tho. But they all work great in my .22 Revolver.
It's true, you can have a blast with .22 for a lot less $$.

I got some Colibri, some SSS and .22 SuperExtra. I only ordered two boxes of the SSS because the long bullet (it's a 60gr long bullet in a .22 short case for those not familiar) made me think that it would do exactly that; jam. If it doesn't work in the Mk.III or 10/22 then I'll shoot it from a bolt gun so I'll use it one way or another. I tried the Colibri in the 10/22. Shot fine but as you said PA, you have to cycle it manually. And it's kinda dirty. Could not hear anything with ears on.
The one I have high hopes for is the SuperExtra. It's a 38gr with a 1030fps velocity so it should be comparatively quiet.

According to the reviews on http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2506391400/aguila-superextra-ammunition-22-long-rifle-40-grain-lead-round-nose it's a good accurate round, but none mentioned how quiet it might be. Check back in with your feedback on that. I'm not a big fan of the LRN and prefer jacketed (supposedly cleaner).

Just a heads up; I didn't get to Riley's today but I've done some interweb snooping and it seems that these guns are going for well below $400 NIB.

I wound up going with the 10150 threaded barrel instead of the Aluminum uppered "Light" model. This one raght hurr... Why? Well Riley's didn't have any but they did have the 10150 and I'd been eyeballing that before deciding on the Light. I asked to take a look at it and when it took it in my hand it was already surprisingly light. It occurred to me that the added weight in the barrel might actually make it a superior trainer for a kid since it should mitigate some recoil whereas I've heard the Light flips quite a bit. The 10150 has some mass, no doubt. But it's right where it needs to be. The price was right at $351 (MSRP is $439) so I grabbed it. I may end up getting the Light version at some point in the future anyway for myself. They also had an original Mk.I and a Silver Eagle Standard. Each was in the 225 range. I might go back and pick one up just for the hell of it. They're nice heirloom pieces to pass on to the kids.
