Wreaths on the Confederate Memorial and the African American Civil War Memorial. It seems quite fitting to me, it's all a part of our nation's history, a very important part. Lives lost in that conflict, be they Blue or Gray, were no less important to the loved ones left behind.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for mentioning this. An anti-Confederate group was lobbying the White House to
dishonor the Confederate Memorial this year... I sent them a message when I heard about it...

Memorial Day only honored Union Soldiers after the Civil War until WWI then was changed to honor all.  I'm glad Obama honored all as he should.

Nope, the first official Decoration Day, later changed to Memorial Day, was by General Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Around 26 years ago I got a job working for Piedmont Airlines.  During my orientation, I was getting the spiel on do's and don't and company holidays. I remember clearly my boss telling me that they don't take Good Friday off, that instead, they take Easter monday (said its a North Carolina thing), oh, and we don't take Memorial Day (he said in a whisper), thats a yankee holiday.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the Civil War), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day

This is the story unless all I've known since a child was wrong.  However, the past really doesn't matter as much as the future.

In New Orleans, we took Mardi Gras Day instead of Memorial Day except, of course, Govt employees who got both.
