Well, I got the old alternator out of "Blue Flame" tonight.  The center cover was a ......bear, but mostly because of the pretty chrome accents around the ignition.  I also found it easier taking the tank off.  The petcock was in the way of the top tab on the center cover.
Here is the alternator ready to come out.

Here us the empty hole.

Here is a good shot of the dampeners.

And here is the reminder as to where all of the wires go when putting it back together.

Now to wait until Wednesday for the GW alternator to arrive.   Smiley
Once I got to where I could take the alternator bolts loose it only took me 5 minutes to figure out how to get the unit out of the bike.  We will see if gettin the new one in is as easy.

That was a lot easier than I thought!  Roll Eyes

Correct me here Jimmy, I'm a bit confused. Was it easier to take the tank off than the alternator, or easier to take the alternator off after you removed the tank and why would you  want to remember where all the wires were, it's all a bunch of confussion under there anyway. Ha ha..

The tank is easy, because I have done it 5-6 times.  It helped open it up so I see what was in the way and keeping the center cover from coming free.  If I didn't have those engine hangers on both sides, it would have been much easier to get the center cover off.   Oh well, that's why Rocketman is so good at it.  He's done it a few times.

I haven't had the pleasure of working on my alternator yet but have read that they aren't the easiest things to do.
My bike only has 22K so hopefully I have a ways to go.

One question: why a GW alternator? (Just asking for personal future reference)

Better?

More charging amps?

Better avaliability?

1/2 the price and essentially the same unit.  You just have to take the 4 long screws out and "clock" the front housing to match the Valkyrie alternator.

So I guess cost is number 1 and availability would be number 2.

I think they have plenty of Valkyrie Alternators available, because of sites like this that share the knowledge and instructions to use alternative parts to keep these bikes running for a long time.

Thanks for the info.

Being the "cheap bohemian" I am I do like this way of thinking.

Enjoy the ride.  I have ~87,600 miles.  Figured it was about time.

I agree and as I initially stated, it's for future reference.

I've had this bike for about 2-1/2yrs now and only put 5K on it, so if my riding habits don't change I'll probably never need this info.

I still have the original alternator on this one.  I have been taking the spare one along on trips, but no trouble yet.... Hoser
