Well here it goes..

Saw this on Yahoo News main page first thing this AM...... First press about a rider killed (that I've seen) since new helmet law went into effect... Head line specifically noted he was not wearing a helmet.....

http://theoaklandpress.com/articles/2012/05/15/news/doc4fb2525797100049044749.txt

Why a guy was out on a bike at 2:40 AM is a question...... but maybe he had to get home....

But another article on the same incident in another paper notes first that it was a drunk driver that hit him..

http://www.freep.com/article/20120515/NEWS04/120515011/Eastpointe-accident-Ten-Mile-Rd-?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

Let the spin begin...

Sad, one life taken and one life ruined do to dui and carelessness. Shame on anyone trying to spin this and make
it part of the helmet debate. I feel for the families of both. My prayers go out to them

I saw that on the news this morning before we went on an "AWARENESS RIDE & PRESS CONFRENCE".

The Free Press has always been biased against motorcyclists and motorcycle rights organizations. You'd almost think they were owned by Rupert Murdock with their sensational headlines and yellow journalism.

You'll have to get used to it.  In Indiana helmet use or no helmet is always mentioned in the accident news no matter whether the motorcyclist is to blame or not.

This follows another recent news story about police offices killed in the line of duty (non accidental). Approximately 70 officers lost their lives last year and out of that 40 were wearing body armor. Helmets and body armor are both good things but they aren't foolproof.

If you are talking about the one in EastPoint (EastDetroit) the truck looked like it hit a wall, I don't think a helmet would make much of a difference in this case.

Seems to me that new reports include the fact a rider was not wearing a helmet, but if he did have a helmet on, no mention is made ........

Then again, I never expect equal, fair, and honest reporting anyway.

The article did say a helmet wouldn't have helped, but before the repeal, the headline would have said :

"Motorcyclist Killed by Drunk Driver"
vs
"Motorcyclist killed- Reports say not wearing Helmet"

Thats the point........

They do that in Wisconsin as well, which has no helmet law. Of course, the paper also lists whether or not a cager was wearing his/her seatbelt, too.

Not sure where we'd be George if we didn't have your learned opinions on what news source we should trust. one thing is for sure, if you say it, it must be true.

. ...What the article should have said is..

Left hand turns will kill you.

" The motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on 10 Mile Road toward Gratiot Avenue at 2:40 a.m. when the pickup truck attempted to turn onto Dodge Street. Ernatt said the pickup truck struck the cyclist pinning him under the truck. "

I just sent an email to the lady doing the article and expressed my dismay of the title.  She responded back and she pointed out the quote about the helmet not making a difference and I point out that foot notes don't cure the problem. I told her I was concerned about the title misleading people and planting a negative seed about the helmet issue. But she just tapped dance around the point and what I took as being politely blown off.

It is just this type of sensational journalism that gives fodder to the insurance lobbyists.

Helmets don't stop drunk drivers, so the focus of that article should have been how drunks endanger everyone on our roads.

Twisting the facts is yellow journalism.
