well to add to the list of BONEHEAD mistakes I went to the building products recycle center and bought what the sales nerd and I both thought was a portable evaporative cooler... turns out its an AC unit instead.. I GUESS I am supposed to hook a 6 inch diameter hose to it and adapt it to a window opening.. well that cant happen as all my window are casement windows ie the swing out type.. so my question is why cant i just turn the dam thing on??? who says the air has to come from the outside?? not to mention the outside are is HOT, hence the need for a cooler..

so my question is why cant i just turn the dam thing on???GO FOR IT! who says the air has to come from the outside?? Air conditioners suck in their air from the inside, there's a bunch gerbils in the air conditioner who suck the heat out of the air, and then they blow it outside, so you'd be blowing hot air inside. Plus the gerbils pee a lot. You might have to take it back... -Mike

If you have ever felt the HOT air coming from behind a window AC unit. You would understand why it would not work. It will probably put more hot air out the back of the unit that it does cold air out the front... Take it back and get the correct thing...

It's always fun times when you don't know what you're doing, isn't it? They can be made to work with casement windows. All it takes is a little bit of smarts. Not much, just a teeny, tiny little bit. But then again, who am I talking to here? You can surely just turn the cursed thing on. The "are" that comes out of the exhaust port will re-introduce the warmth and moisture into the room that the air coming out the front has removed, plus some for the machinery working inside it. If you want some directions, apologize for spewing oil information at me and telling me I was using the "wrong oil" when I wasn't asking for it.

You can cut a piece of plywood to fit the opening when the window is open and cut out a hole for that 6" "dryer hose" that vents the hot air outside. If you are in a humid area, the swamp cooler doesn't do a lot of good so this may work better.
They aren't as good as a window unit but they beat a fan hands down. Yes, I have one.

I have one on my Marinette catamaran and it does a good job. It's a dual hose one and is not supposed to be as efficient with just the one exhaust but it works. Gottta empty the condensate bucket quite often....

unnerstand..BUTT... my windows are 5ft. tall casements.. so when they are open it is nearly impossible to fully close the opening for flies and skeeters.. plus the window which is wood would be hanging out in the elements ie RAIN.. it would be waay too much hassle

So couldn't you just put the gerbils in a smaller box that will fit in the windows? You could also drill a hole on the outside part of the bottom to let out the pee.
