I loosened the 3 screws holding the case together, pulled the impeller side of the case loose, and rotated the casing to match the Valkyrie unit.

The problem came when I put the screws back in and tightened them back up.  When tight, the impeller was in a bind and would not spin.  If I loosen the 3 screws, the impeller spins freely again.

I rotated it back to the original position, tightened the screws again and it was still in a bind.

I only pulled the housing apart a little over 1/16 of an inch.  Just enough to free the housing.

I am at a loss.  The next thing to do is pull it apart and put it back together and see if I can figure out what is binding.

What do y'all think?

Did you rotate the impeller end (front), not the back? If you twist on the back, you can injure the wiring to the stator, possilbly break them. Don't ask how I know this.
If you only moved it about a 16th of an inch, I don't see how the brushes could have slipped behind the brush rotor. You can take the rotor completely out with little or no problem getting it back in, after checking for any obstructions. You can use a paper clip to hold the brushes in an outer position when the rotor is re-asseembled back into the stator housing. Good luck.

Well I got it freed up and reinstalled.  Now I just have to put all of the parts back on that I took off.  Smiley  This includes the center cover.  Sad

RD, I had tapped the housing with a hammer to try and close that 1/16 gap and put the impeller in a bind.  I took a screw driver and pried gently on the impeller flange and it popped back into place.  No more binding.

It took me 10 minutes to get the alternator stabbed back in the hole with the new dampeners lined up.  Guess I will find out how hard this center cover will be to get back on now.  Smiley

Thanks for the tips RD.

Ok fellas, this is a little creepy! (and once ya'll read this probably will think I'm  a bit wierd. oh well, join the crowd)

As I was reading about this alt problem I was wondering when all this happened yesterday.
So I looked at the times when the posts were made.

To me that's the freaky part!

Or did ya'll two plan it that way?

Sometimes, you get into the issue and time is not relevant.    And it's never too late to help a buddy.

What is even more strange is that the actual time of our posts is 2 hours later than it shows.  His post was at 11:05 and mine was at 11:50.  That's pm.  Smiley
The "server" time is up at the top of the page on the right.  Now it shows 2 later than current Central Time.
I just couldn't go to bed without knowing if I could get it installed in about the same amount of time it took me to get it out.  Smiley

Now that we've gotten all the times corrected, does the alternator work Jimmy?

I haven't fired it up yet.  I will have to get the tip sensor level and put the battery and tank back on before I can start it.
Maybe I will have some time tomorrow afternoon before Joe gets here.
