My pipes are too loud.I want to put baffles in them.I look inot them and see nothing so I am guessing the baffles are out.How hard are they to put in.Do I just go to cobra site and order some? I would suppose thats what to do. but just had new airfilter and carb adjustment done.I am thinking jetting or lean condition would be affected.like less lean with baffles in.I am dumb aobut this as you can tell.

Cobra baffles run about 36 bucks apiece, install easily, but in my opinion don't help much. I bought some additional muffler wrap and added that for my trip to Az. When I got back I found me a set of modified OEM pipes.

I found that the older I get the less noise I like.

I got a set of baffles from a fellow member and installed them, then went by the stealer to ask about adjusting and was told it didn't need it.  As far as sound, you will be able to tell, it will take the edge of though you will still hear it when you open it up to climb or pass in a hurry.  You'll have less popping and it will perform better.  I inserted mine backwards to begin with since it gave me a hard edge to scrape the soot of the pipe walls, then pushed (hammered/wiggled/twisted) them in the right way.

I'm still not convinced I'm staying with the 6x6, I like quiet, but for nor the baffles and a set of earplugs will do.

Got this info from 2qmedic before I ditched my 6x6's :  "On the back end of the baffle, there is a smaller exhaust exit tube that sticks out about 1/2 inch, about 1 inch in diameter. This is where you size and then secure a freeze plug onto. Drill the 3/4 inch hole in the freeze plug and secure it onto the short exhaust tube mentioned above. I had tried a 1/2 inch hole and it was too much."

I never got that far because I found a Great deal on a set of I/s pipes from some guy down south (thanks Marty) that I got in trade for the 6x6's.

Wrapped mine last year ... Gave them a nice rumble, less 'tinny' sound & about 1/2 volume on the highway.  cooldude

I run "shorties" (6 into 6) without baffels and have never been drilled for baffels.  The only extend about half way down the saddle bag and make the phat lady sound like the beast she really is.  I know that is not for everybody but I like the sound.

NOPE!!   Greg if I was going to brag about the GREAT trade I made for a set of 6 into 6 Cobra pipes, I would have mentioned a bag of Traeger wood pellets sells for $23 bucks.   2funny   T.P.

How much of this S/S wool are you wiring onto each baffle/  You are attaching it with S/S wire, are you not?  This is my first post here and I am somewhat kinetic in my understanding of "how to".  Also, are you using the size wool pad that the link takes you to?  Thx in advance for your patience

HEY DREAMCHASER,  I started out wrapping with some fibreglass that came from SWARTZY but was reading on line about the fibreglass  packing not holding up as well as SS. so I took it off and ordered the ss from the link (ordered 2)  the Cobra Baffles  are 11 inches long and I had cut the FG 6 inches wide , it will overlap a bit.  I plan to cut the ss about 6 3/4 inches long ( so you will get 3 per sheet. the sheets are 11" x 20 1/2 ") will be wrapping with SS wire also. will post pic when I get down to it.  T.P.

I talked to Eric the owner of Steel wool Direct and he is very interested in helping us out. more for Eric later.  T.P.

Thank you TPI will be anxiously waiting for those pix.   I'm gonna get right on pulling out all 6 so I can be prepared for when the S/S wool gets here & you have the pix up.

First I have to put my bike all back together so I can take pictures of her for Hayhauler. Roll Eyes  She's a  '99 white Standard with Ultimate Big Boy set, air horns, floorboards, round risers, GPS, River Road bags & a bunch of other Cobra and Kuriakin and Montana stuff that all came with her & only has 11, 600 + miles on her---(breath!)  I just put all that out there for ya to hold you over till I get the pix posted.

You guys make me feel right at home here!

By the way, my dog is from Lipan.  Does that ring any bells?

Again, welcome and remember, there are some on this board that have forgotten more than most of us will ever know about the Valkyrie motorcycle.  You have come to the right place.

Are you from Lipan too?  Not far from 5_19 over in Dublin if you are.

Here's a pic of my bike after the painting.  Now blue w/silver Mustang stripes.  Smiley

No, I am originally from the greater Chicago area.  Only my (my wifes's) dog is from Lipan.

Really nice looking ride.  Please pardon my comments from yesterday.  I will surely post pix as soon as I can.  I just picked my bike up in Salem, Oregon  last Thursday, and this being Oregon, that was the last dry day.  I have owned a lot of bikes, but this is my first Honda, and so far I am really impressed.  I am anxious to get on the road and log some miles, soak up some scenery.

First things first.  I need to quiet her down & adjust the backpressure, so I  can get the max performance, milage and engine longevity.  The 2 previouse owners put on more accessories than miles; that's a wonderful gift to me .

Once again, thank you for the warm welcome.  The vast wealth of knowledge available here is what drew me to becoming a member.

Good morning!  I did it!  I packed my baffles with the S/S wool that you were talking about, TP.  I had to use a slide hammer with the hook attachment to get them out, after letting them soak over night in a product from Sea Foam called "Deep Creep" to dissolve some of the carbon deposit, which I sprayed liberally into the baffle as far in as I could.  Make sure that your bike is sitting a tiny  bit uphill so it doesnt just run out.  Then I used a wire wheel  on a bench grinder to remove all the carbon and rust from the 2 places that contact the inner wall of the pipe, so they could go in easier than they came out!

Don't cut the packing at 6 3/4an inch ", because I found out that there is no way its going back in the pipe if it overlaps.  You need to cut the packing mat'l so it little more than butts.  Then starting at the end awat from the welded nut I  made S/S wire rings to go around and fasten it tightly to the baffle in 5 equal spaces twisted to tightness with large needle nose visegrips.  Now you need to spray in the pipe, some more of that Deep Creep, and reinsert the baffle into the pipe so tne crossbar on the end is about an inch inside of the slash like they were to begin with.

HEY  DREAMCHASER,   What was the outcome of your baffle wrap.

I have no cross bar on my baffles,  have not been able to get to mine yet.

Hey TP,   My exhaust is now quiet at startup, has a nice rumble my ha going down the road, now has minimal crackle shifting gears and backing down from higher RPM, and still sounds like a dragster under full power acceleration.  I like it!

I don't know what to tell you about no bar accross the baffle.  Can you look into the baffle with a high intensity flashlight?  Maybe the previous owner of your pipes took them out and put them back in backwards and the bar is about 14" further up the pipe, in which case you will need to modify the hook attachment on a slide hammer to be able to grab it.  Good luck because mine were really in there.  When I reinstalled them I  skipped the retaining screws, cuz I had to use the butt of a hammer handle to drive them back in, by hitting the head of the hammer with the heal of my hand so as not to deform the end of the baffle.  I will no doubt need a slide hammer if they ever need to come out again.
