150/80-17 is the stock size. I like Avon Cobras. They aren't cheap but they last as well or longer than any of them.
Some say the Metzlers hang on better but they don't last as long. Bridgestones are less expensive but also don't last as long. opinions vary on the Dunlop Elite radials, they last well though.
If you want to try something very different, do a search on using s rear tire on the front. The sizing is a bit of a problem, you need to mount them backwards so the don't come apart due to breaking force but the tread is deeper and so they reportedly last longer.
Of course as always, your mileage may vary.

It will be narrower and not as tall, it will work though. The speedo will show a higher speed than is true, it will also lower the bike a bit.
It seems to me that some guys found 130/90 rear tires that are fairly close in height.

I have a Dunlop D404 rear (bias ply) on the front of my bike. Under 100 BUCKS delivered to my door from JC Whitney..I've ridden in heavy rain and snow and this tire holds the road very well..

Warlock and I are running Avon AM-26 Roadrider rear tires in 130/90-17.  I got mine from Chapparal for $117 shipped.

Any thoughts on how the smaller tire might affect handling if you keep a MC tire on the front?   ???

The 130's we are talking about are MC tires, just rear tires on the front. Twice the tread (longer to wear out).

D404 130/90-17 bias rear on the front, not reversed as I'm more concerned with shedding water in the rain than delamination. Falken car tire on the back, both with Dynabeads for balancing.

Over 12k miles on it, still lots of tread. Great in two days of rain last summer, even in standing water on the road. It sings a bit (that's what the stereo is for), but I think I'll get at least one more 12-15K mile season out of it. $113 delivered, $30 for mounting.

I just ordered a rear tire for the front last Friday and while I was at the shop perusing their tire catalogues it seems there's a couple of reasons the rear tires last so much longer on the front:

1) Tread Depth
and
2) Rubber Hardness.

The tire catalogues showed that rears had a wide patch of medium-hard rubber down the middle and two narrower patches of soft rubber on the sides.  They also stated that soft rubber is more "grippy" and that hard rubber is more resistant to wear.
